Totes (that's the brand) umbrella. Collapses to tiny size, so it can always be with you, or in your backpack. Expands to nearly golf size for lots of coverage (depending on wind and stride). Fairly robust against wind, too. Only drawbacks the $25 cost if you're prone to losing them, and probably having to mail-order it.
Maybe 8 inches long, collapsed? From memory. Totes does have even smaller ones, but they're smaller on expansion too... might be bigger than cheaper tiny umbrellas, though, you could check, I think Totes gives measurements.
The large umbrella for days you know it will rain, and the small one that you can throw in your backpack, or whatever, as a backup for those times you get caught w/o the big one. That should get you 96% covereage!
*grins* I was thinking about that this morning... but what happens when you move to a small apartment at a new university and all of your large umbrellas have naturally been packed into some corner of some completely unlabeled box in the towering wall of boxes that lines your wall and you're late to catch the bus, eh? what then? :-)
(grins) along with trash bag boots maybe. The storm drainage system on mainstreet here seems to involve routing a small river down the right side of the road...
