She doesn’t like to admit it to herself, and she never would admit it at all to anyone else, but Mel’s worried.
She’s worried because there’s no fresh food. She’s worried because the food they do have is running out quickly. She’s worried because she has a nagging suspicion that she shouldn’t be this tired or this hungry. She’s worried because she knows she doesn’t know as much about all this as she really should do, as she’s the one going through it. She’s worried because she’s sure she’s losing weight, not gaining it.
She’s worried than she’s spending far too much time on her knees, in the bathroom of 103, using one hand to hold grimy purple hair out of the porcelain bowl, watching as she wastes more of their precious food supplies.
And there’s nothing she can do about it. She’s sick, and she’s helpless, and while he’s in the hospital, she’s alone.
Those tears that mix with the mess as she flushes it away? She’s not mentioning those to anyone either.
