Bella update

The vet came out for Bella today.  There was a lot of grossness to be had.  The injury looks like multiple slabs of meat shifting against each other when she moves.  There's a two by six inch flap of skin hanging over the thing.  There is a lot of drainage.

I changed the bandage yesterday night, which was a feat because I had to override my sqick ( Read more... )

Nyx had the same sort of injury as a 7 month old. The vet could reach under the skin and touch the top of her withers. She made a drain hole at the bottom with a little rubber tubing and then all I did was hose the crap out of it twice a day and then betadine wash it. And I got aggressive with it! I put a spray nozzle on the hose and powered it right in there. Washed out all the gunk and debrided and irritated the pink stuff into growing cleanly and nicely. Then I wrapped a sheet around her. Took two weeks of twice daily power washing and then I backed down to once a day. After a month I didn't need to take care of it any more. Now, as a coming 5 year old, you can't hardly see a scar or divot from the missing muscle.

I also gave her SMZs twice daily for about two weeks,...

My kids, they are scarred,....

there was talk of a garden hose, but the hole is so deep that the water might go into bad places. other than that, it sounds like we're on the same plan, complete with drainage thingie. good to hear these things heal.

ARGH! Horses all have a death wish!

The (then) 32 year old pony across the street tore her eyelid 3/4 off on a stall gate in the same stall she had been in without incident for the past 15 years. It's simply amazing the things they can dream up to do to themselves.

And you're right: those places where the horses wander around in fields full of old bedsprings and rusty farm equipment - nah. Nothing ever happens there.

Simply amazing. I hope both Bella and Rosie heal uneventfully.
