In which I enjoy listing for no reason

May 19, 2008 17:53

Because I was in a list-making mood.

Things have been pretty hectic lately, by my standards at least- I don't like being too busy. I need free afternoons, where I don't have to be anywhere.

This past week-and-a-half-ish I have:
taken the English AP Test
had an annoyingly long senior recognition service at school
packed for Disney
gone to see Iron ( Read more... )

family, the host, movie, disney world, books, stephenie meyer, school

I've listened to a couple other versions of the song (My dad has the orginal album in our basement, I believe). I really like them all because I love the lyrics. But I think the one with Melissa is my favorite- probably because I heard it first. I like the talking guitar line, hokieness notwithstanding.

I love the icon! Haha. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Iron Man. I didn't know much about the movie other than my brother really wanted to see it and had pretty low expectations. It was really good though. I like these types of surprises.

I am, unfortunately, finding myself disinclined to pay $20+ on a book I might not like,
I can't blame you for that. Books are so expensive. I got The Host discounted, so it wasn't too bad.

Mmm...I feel that there shall be a lot of justification for the Host from the author on things like the constant violence against female characters to the fact that Pet was judged on appearance like a piece of meat and then got tossed out of her body because they felt Wanderer deserved it more.

HOUSE!!!!!

Heh, now you have caught the Thunder Road obsession as well! I was just listening to it.

Good luck with your list!

Was there violence towards female characters other than Wanderer/Melanie?

I agree about Pet. I don't understand why Wanderer was so guilt-free, especially since she remembers Pet's mother. I suppose we're supposed to be okay with it because doesn't Pet mention, just before she's abducted, wanting to return to the Flowers? I know she thinks something about her mother not being able to protect her forever.
I need to reread.

Thanks! The list is going well. I was pretty productive yesterday.

You're right, it was pretty much all against Melanie/Wanderer. However, I count at least five separate kinds of violence visited on her that's just...*shudder* Don't think it's much better because it was just on her. (and it isn't a problem of context because I know why she's being abused. But still, I find most of it excessive and disturbing)

Yeah, I think the Pet thing was supposed to be some easy out but I think it's utterly messed up.

It was grisly. Realistic though, I think. Well, I understand why they would want to kill her. I don't know about her being knocked around like she is. I suppose it was a way to demonstrate the severity of their anger without them actually killing Wanderer?

Regardless, I didn't enjoy that aspect *cringes*.
