Family traditions and the end of the world.

Jul 03, 2008 00:00

In 1996, Dad and I started a very funny family tradition for the fourth of July. Now, this might sound strange, as neither of us are from the United States, back then hadn't had many friends in the USA, and our Independence Day is in September. Never the less, we have a July 4 tradition ( Read more... )

*snuggles you*

My gramma and I were given that movie on vhs xmas 1999 (I believe) and we watched it often. It's one of those movies that I will watch whenever I find it on, no matter what point of the film it's at and I will think of her. Her younger brother wouldn't watch it, he's one of those "older, southern men" that won't watch "that black fella" *rolls eyes* and I remember her telling him once "you missed a good movie, this one and the other one that she got me are two of my favorite movies" - the other film was men in black - I miss her. I miss watching movies with her.

one of these days I'll have a better net connection and when I do, you and I are going to watch Independence Day, by days (like you did with your dad) and have chat on. OK? Might not be next year, but one of these years we'll do it.

*snuggles* I've heard a lot of hate against ID4, and most of it comes from people who just don't get the point. Men In Black is also adorable! I like the first more than the second, but both are also in my collection :) *hugs* And I'll hold you to that promise! We'll chat while we cheer for the Knights!! (Just saw day 3. It's the most heartwrenching of the three days, as is when most of the people you thought would survive die)

A movie which also has Brent Spiner, I might add! I remember seeing it at the cinema with my Beast and my brother - my brother and I spent the first twenty minutes in hysterics, because the President's surname was Whitmore, which was ours too, and it just struck as as deeply funny. We tried not to be too noisy...

Oh yes! Today I saw his part... Brent is hilarious as the scientist, and unrecognizable if you only knew him as Data. His added scenes in the special edition are the <3. Especially when he complains to Jeff Goldblum that he's making them look bad.

I can't even remember if I got the special edition or not - it's been a long while since I watched ID4. I do remember his lovely blue eyes, though! (I even wrote a Dr Okun story.)

I was lucky to be blessed with at least two nerdy relatives. My grandma (My dad's mom) was a Trekkie. Honest to god, had seen the whole original series, knew the names of every alien, had a crush on Kirk and hated Picard, even having arguments as of why Kirk was a better captain. HAd she been born in the states, she would've even had a full Klingon dress, I bet. When the Star Trek movies were shown on TV, my grandma forced us to watch them all. Dad was more into cult movies. He could recite half the dialogue on Blues Brothers, and on ocassion, had moments like this :)

(He also liked slash. How cool was that?!)

I just watched Will Smith dragging his alien across the desert.

"And what the hell is that smell?!"
