Really? I found it rather endearing. As a matter of fact, we played it last year for Reformation Sunday. Although given that there are kids in the congregation, we changed "feces" to "ink well". I'm told that ink well is also historically accurate, so I didn't mind changing the lyric.
I forget if he makes this comment in the clip above, but he's said on more than one occasion that the song is always either loved or hated... No one ever says "Ehh."
He also says that it's in the bars where it's not well received, but that scholarly audiences always dig it.
