congratulations. speaking as a person with an English degree (or three), it doesn't matter if you do anything with it. Reading and writing make life worth living and that's always been enough for me.
I taught high school english for five years, one year in inner city Oakland schools. I also taught writing at the college level for over a decade. In a lot of ways teaching high school was more rewarding and gave me the opportunity to change lives. Most private schools don't require more than a bachelor's degree. Public ones require either a credential or a graduate degree of some kind.
there are always jobs for teachers. not maybe in places you'd want to live forever, but always jobs. and if you want someone else to pay for the credential, do teach for america for a year or two and get it that way.
I thought about being a teacher before, but I can't stand the politics of it. If I could teach what I want without having to worry about some parent freaking out over Graham Greene because they don't understand it or some other stupid shit like that, then sure. But I would. That and I don't really like other people's kids much.
Congratulations! Following your bliss is a much better way to go through life than following prescribed/safe routes.
And figuring it out before you've spent tons on a specialization is a double bonus! Paying loans to cover a degree you don't actually care about just sucks twice as hard. :)
Yeah. I did that the first time right out of high school because everyone told me I couldn't be a writer. I needed a REAL job. Now I guess I've caught myself doing it again, but hey, at least I caught it.
Yeah, well. Knowing how to communicate, whether it be basic directions, a story, or a complex philosophical theory, etc., is the most valuable thing one can bring to any workplace. I think it comes down to- go to school to learn about what lights you up, because that's really the last time you get to follow your interests with such focus.
Getting paid to do what you love is awesome. Failing that, getting paid in order to keep doing what you love, even if it's just on the side or as a hobby, is pretty damned good.
I'm just going to do what I want because that's actually all that I'm good at. My only other qualifications are that of a cashier. I'm a damn good cashier, but it doesn't pay shit.
I know, right? That would be so cool. I love that kind of stuff where a writer takes something classic and spins it. Unless it's like Twilight or something equally nasty.

And you're not wrong about Robin Hood and werewolves.
