Just trying to imagine what the impact of the news was like. I know that my Dad volunteered for the military about one month later, instead of waiting for a draft notice.

Indeed. Apparently it was pretty crazy.

Although oddly enough we owe humanity's survival to WWII: If it had happened 10 years later we would have all had a large stockpile of nukes. We got off lucky with that one.
