One more nail in the coffin.

Really, State of California, really?
Prop 16 passing makes me much happier about leaving at least, eh?

Looks like it turned around overnight and didn't pass in the end. Yay? It's a nice non-loss (I'm hard pressed to call it a victory.)

Tide is turning, as of now 55% reporting and it's 51% No.

But either way, goes to show that propositions are a BAD IDEA. Because corporations who can afford to pay for constant TV ads can get any damn law they want passed. The public is poorly informed and not a good legislative body.

These days, the only prop I'd support is one making it much, much harder to get a prop on the ballot. Direct democracy scales so, so badly and CA is an object lesson in that.

Now at 98% reporting, and 16 has failed. Still, Jen is exactly right. Unless we overhaul the initiative referendum process, the next corporation/industry is going to come along with more money and a stealthier campaign because they saw PG&E (16) and Auto Insurance Companies (17) get so close, and they're going to try to write their own legislation.

You go on ahead, Cy. I'm going to try to save this state while I still can. ;)

I'm going to talk to every student I have about the initiative process, its goals and results, and then let them draw their own conclusions. If I can inspire 3/30ths of them to be conscientious voters, then I'll have done 3 times as well as my own teachers.

Also, CA Constitutional Convention. That's my horse in the race.
