The polar bear!

Anyhow, quick question for you gun people out there (I'm looking at you SBG). Can you actually take down a bear with a .45?

.45 what?

If you're talking about a .45ACP pistol, it's possible, but I wouldn't want to try it. .45-70 Government, launched from a Marlin 1895, would be far more likely to drop Smokey.

That said, it's not really about caliber, it's about placement. You hit Smokey in the paw with that .45-70, it's just gonna piss him off. Put a .22WMR right into his eye and he'll back right down. Maybe.

(omitting the old jokes about filing off the front sight...)

It was a pistol, supposedly a standard gov't issue gun taken off a US Marshal...

That'd probably be a 1911 or similar. Again, not the gun I'd choose for that situation, but if that's all ya got...

But what swiped that pilot out of the cockpit? The polar bear's angry mother? A monster?

Multiple head shots: Definately. Single head shot: Possibly.
Multiple chest shots: Eventually... Single chest shot: Good luck, you'll need it on a direct hit to the heart. Paw/hind shot: Your breakfast. Most people use a hellva lot bigger caliber guns on bear.
