If you're talking about a .45ACP pistol, it's possible, but I wouldn't want to try it. .45-70 Government, launched from a Marlin 1895, would be far more likely to drop Smokey.
That said, it's not really about caliber, it's about placement. You hit Smokey in the paw with that .45-70, it's just gonna piss him off. Put a .22WMR right into his eye and he'll back right down. Maybe.

Multiple head shots: Definately. Single head shot: Possibly. Multiple chest shots: Eventually... Single chest shot: Good luck, you'll need it on a direct hit to the heart. Paw/hind shot: Your breakfast. Most people use a hellva lot bigger caliber guns on bear.
