I feel like the Beholder has lost some of its mojo. It used to be one of the pantheon of scariest monsters out there. Beholders, elder dragons, illythids were the kind of A-game monsters you knew meant you were at the pinnacle of your adventuring career. You also knew that not everyone in the party would survive. If I were to tell a story with a beholder in it, not everyone would come through on the other side.

Also, have you read the new Conan yet? I'm curious as to whether it's worth picking up.

Its a pretty nice adaptation. Most of the issue is Conan running from some guards and getting on a boat and then learning about Belit. Plus Cloonan draws some pretty sweet Hyborian age action...

As for the Beholder, John Rogers I think does a decent job of showing off the "Awwww! We're fucked!" reaction for the adventurers when the Beholder pops up as the leader of some of the bad guys...
