7 months later, I have realized that my main problem is that Ahiru has human-level intellect and spent the whole series living as a girl and it never felt fake or like this wasn't who she was. Saying she's trapped by her birth status to be a wordless animal surrounded by dumb animals is a horrific fate.

Ahiru is a girl born in the body of a duck. She can't change who she is, but why shouldn't she be able to decide what body to live in?
(Basically, she's transhuman. Does that make the ending transphobic? "You can defy fate and choose your own destiny. Except for your physical appearance. That, you're stuck with for life.")
