Filled: Allissablue: First Date Prompt

Aug 09, 2010 10:28

Prompt: alissablue asked for: This prompt is nice and clean, PG-13 (or whatever works for you). The idea is that Luke and Reid have been together for about 20 years and their teenage daughter (or son) is getting ready for his/her first date. Take it from there. (Would like it if Reid and Luke both try to give some advice and wait for their kid to come home.)

Author notes: Totally off the cuff thing that I rushed through at work. If you see errors or typos, please point them out. This isn't exactly what alissablue wanted, but here's what I've got:

Ethan had been living with them for about two years when he announced over breakfast that he had a date for Friday night, and that it would be nice if Luke and Reid could, you know, not be around when the date came to pick him up.

Reid looked to Luke who sat at the table looking stunned for some reason, like it had never occurred to Luke that his little brother might actually grow up and do all the normal kid things that Luke had so wanted for him after Lily and Holden's death.

"Don't look so shocked," Reid said under his breath when Ethan got up to get more milk for his breakfast cereal. "You'll give the kid a complex."

Luke just turned his gape on Reid and blinked at him, a strange flush rising up his throat.

"What?" Reid asked. "He's a good looking kid, a nice kid, too. Surely it has occurred to you that someone would recognize that and ask him out on a date at some point in his life. This is a good thing, Luke."

Ethan sat down and filled his bowl again, pouring the milk in, and looking between Reid and Luke curiously. "So, um, what's up? I mean, I can go, right? My grades have been up, and my attitude is better, and you said that if I got my crap together," at this he looked to Reid, "then I could start hanging out with my friends again. I mean, I thought I'd done my time for all that stupid stuff I did last month."

Luke cleared his throat and said, "Yeah, I, uh...Reid?"

Reid shrugged. "Sure. Sounds great to me. Be home by morning."

"Reid!" Luke said. "No, um, that's not right. I mean, we have to talk about curfews and stuff. Eleven," Luke said, his tone firm. "Eleven at the very latest."

Reid shot Luke a what the fuck look, but didn't say anything. He'd learned his lesson about undermining Luke's authority in front of Ethan, and had no intention of spending another night on the bedroom floor because Luke was too pissed to let him near the bed, but didn't want to scare Ethan into thinking they were having problems or anything like that.

Ethan sighed heavily and gave Luke a long, sad look with those big, brown eyes he shared with his brother. Luke looked flustered and then put his fist down on the table resoundingly. "Eleven. And...uh, who is this...person?" Luke asked.

"Miles Jackson," Ethan said, standing up to put his bowl in the sink.

Luke made a weird noise, and Reid looked over to see if he was choking. He looked like he was about to freak out, but he covered his mouth with his napkin and coughed softly, gaining some composure.

"What?" Reid whispered softly, his voice covered by the sound of water running into Ethan's bowl. "Do you know this kid? Is he a creep?"

Luke shook his head and smiled in outrageously false cheer when Ethan grabbed his book bag from the hook and said, "Okay, peeps. See you later."

"We'll talk more about this after school," Luke said.

Ethan rolled his eyes. "What's to talk about? It's a date. God, whatever."

Luke stared after him as he walked out the back door to meet the school bus.

"What's your problem?" Reid asked. "You're about to hyperventilate."

Luke looked at him with huge, amazed eyes and said with all the depth and sincerity in the world, "Reid. Ethan just came out to us. And it was no big thing. He came out to us like it was no big deal at all."

Reid shrugged. "You'd call the near seizure you were having over it no big thing?"

"Yes," Luke said. "I would."

Reid shook his head. "I don't understand. What does that mean?"

Luke grabbed Reid's hand, his voice thick with emotion. "Reid, Ethan just came out to us and it was no big deal. We did something right. We did it right. We're gonna be okay parents after all."

Reid fought a smile and pulled Luke into a hug. "You're an idiot."

"I know," Luke moaned.

A few minutes later, Luke was putting the milk back in the fridge and humming under his breath when suddenly he stopped and turned around, his face reflecting pure horror. "Reid! Do you have any idea what Ethan and that kid are going to want to do together?"

Reid smirked. "Sure. I think I showed you last night."

"Condoms, Reid! Did we tell him about condoms? Does he have any? We're horrible parents! What was I thinking? We've failed at one of the most important parts of parenthood. Again!"

Reid rolled his eyes. "I'll stop by the school and give him a box if it will make you feel better."

Luke pointed his finger at him. "You wouldn't! That's such a bad idea!"

Reid laughed. "Come on, Luke. I'm joking. Calm down."

"He's going to have sex, Reid."

"Probably."

Luke shook his head. "How did this all happen? He was just born the other day. I remember when Mom had him, and he was just this little bundle in my hands."

"All right," Reid said. "I was expecting this part of the freak out, but I can't stick around for it. Brains to cut into. Work to be done." Reid kissed Luke's mouth and said, "Don't hurt yourself panicking over this. Kids grow up. It's a good thing."

Luke nodded, but his eyes were filled with emotions tumbling around like crazy, and it made Reid want to laugh, but, unfortunately, he really couldn't stick around to watch the melt down.

Still, somehow, eleven o'clock on Friday night rolled around faster than Reid had thought possible. He stood by the window repeatedly checking the driveway for Miles Jackson's car.

"Reid," Luke said. "He just called. They're on their way. The movie ran over."

Reid narrowed his eyes. "Likely story. An even more likely story is that they lost track of time."

Luke wrapped his arms around Reid's waist and looked out the window with him. "Maybe."

"Luke, do you realize what that Miles jerk wants to do to our kid?" Reid pressed his forehead to the glass.

"Oh, so now you're worried about it. The other morning you thought it was laughable, to be expected."

Reid clenched his teeth. "If he hurts him, I have a bone saw and I'm not afraid to use it."

"Sexy," Luke murmured. He was tucked warm and sleepy under Reid's arm.

"Where's your panic now?" Reid asked. "You were losing it just the other day."

"I processed and now I'm fine. It's all good."

Reid sighed. "Good, then you can keep me from losing it because...holy freak-out, Luke, what were we thinking? Ethan's too young for this. He's just a kid."

"Yeah," Luke said. "We were all just a kid once."

Reid wrapped his arms around Luke and held on tight. When the lights from Miles Jackson's car swung up the drive, Luke kissed Reid's neck and sighed, "Finally, we can go to bed."

THE END
