I think the second passage you highlighted is interesting because one of the things I felt Luke really needed was a friend. If indeed Casey and Ali moved to Carbondale with Will and Gwen, that left Luke with Reid or Noah, but no confidant. Yeah, Holden and Lucinda (and even Lily when she wasn't consumed by her own drama-queen life) often played that role, but Luke really needed a peer to hang out with. Poor Luke.
