I've never travelled by myself (cash flow issues) but I could never see myself staying in a hostel. Sleeping in a room with friends is one thing, complete strangers, no way. Not to mention security issues since I'd be travelling with expensive electronics and illicit green substances. Plus I just really value my privacy.
Ever thought of trying sites like Couch Surfer or Airbnb? The first one is free and the second one is basically short term sublets. Can give you a better idea of the people you're staying with ahead of time. I'll probably use airbnb for finding an apartment to rent when I finally get to Vancouver for a week or two.
Well, I always bring electronics too and just put them in my bunk bed with me. You can also lock them up. I have thought about both of those sites, but I don't like the idea of sleeping on someone's couch for free.. I'd feel like I owed them something. Airbnb seems more expensive than a hostel. So, I'm good with cheap hostels.
2 things, I think that was the best time I ever slept in O'hare. Secondly what about that hostel we stayed in with a bunch of people in Montreal? that was 8 people!
Looks like 40 bucks for your own private room? That's a pretty good deal.... I may try this out next time, good to stray from the Upper West Side eventually.
I'm trying to remember where I stayed when I came for CMJ in 2003, but I was not familiar with the layout of the city at the time, so I really have no idea. I think it was on the UWS? No clue.

I've stayed there at least three times so obviously I wasn't scared off but it's not for the faint of heart.

The rooms are sooo laughably small. If I sat on the bed with my back to the wall and had my legs straight, my feet were flat on the opposite wall.
It doesn't have a ceiling either, rather it's some lattice work that would keep someone from trying to climb walls.
The place also houses transients on a seperate floor. They hang out in the lobby or the commons occasionally. They're harmless, just sketchy looking.
It all makes for a weird experience and great stories to bring back home.
Plus, it's the East Village and the Bowery so...
