short fic round-up part 2

Mar 11, 2013 11:34

What the subject line says, though first, a quick fic rec--I'm probably every kind of late to this one and you've all read it already, but in case you haven't: go read misswinterhill's Little Birds right now. Seriously. I was slightly hesitant ("...bird AU, really?") but OMG it is lovely and Erik and Charles are brilliantly in character and the dialogue is ( Read more... )

i wrote what now?, apparently crossdressing, fic recs, fic: james/michael, sick james needs a hug, selkies?!, fantastic friends, valentine's day

James as a selkie will never not be adorable! You realise you have to write the story where he finds his family, right? And there is some angst because, despite having already been told otherwise, Michael thinks that James will return them, and probably should return to them, and he would be better off. And then James tells him not to be a big silly-billy... :)

Sick!James will also never not be adorable too. It's bad that he's sick, of course, but it's also kind of...adorable. As is Michael taking care of him...

Sweary!crossdressing!James is a little less adorable, but instead rather hilarious! Although I reserve the right not to actually imagine him in a dress... ;)

Also, I kind of want chocolate-flavoured alcohol now...

You realise you have to write the story where he finds his family, right?Eventually, yes. :-p That's obviously the last one. And it'll be a little sad, because James is giving something up, but not entirely sad--it's not as if they can't visit, after all. And True Love is worth it. (Silly-billy is a marvelous word. I'm going to steal it and use it ( ... )

(Silly-billy is a marvelous word. I'm going to steal it and use it.)

Steal away - I think it sounds like the kind of word James would definitely use! And Michael would definitely be one, in that context! :D

they will go back to Michael's place and have homemade soup and croutons and cuddle on the sofa until James is thoroughly better

This. I want homemade soup now. And cuddles. Although possibly not the being sick bit. Although it might be worth it to get soup and cuddles!

I almost didn't write that last one, because that's so not one of my kinks

And I guess writing things that aren't your kinks is a challenge, right? I've certainly written kinks/pairings etc. over the years that I didn't imagine myself writing beforehand, and it's definitely broadened my horizons...

though apparently we're getting it, in Filth. Oh, James...

I...actually can't imagine it, I don't think. I suspect that is going to be one disturbing movie...

Michael: ...what did you just call me?
James: well, you are.

Michael's evidently a good cook, when he has someone to cook for! He's said he likes to, in interviews. *pauses to picture Michael happily in the kitchen, cooking for someone he loves* I can manage the kind of soup where you have the dry ingredients and add cream or milk and stir on the stove, but mostly I'm too lazy. Still, you can have the cuddles...

And I guess writing things that aren't your kinks is a challenge, right?

Precisely! And I like how that one came out, so. *shrug* Broadening horizons...so I got an email about a conference call-for-papers that opened with, 'your submission is expected by [date],' and I might've snickered a little.

I can try to imagine it...we got that one not-very-detailed picture, and we've seen him in kilts...but somehow my brain just shies away from going to there. He's awfully brave, doing this one, I think. But he's going to be so good--which means, so disturbing, yes. And we'll all see it regardless of the disturbing!

:D Proof that I can still write short fic! As I stare balefully at the Film Fest AU...

I somehow completely forgot about the one you wrote for me. I blame school muddling up my brain.

I am more and more intrigued by selkie!James the more I read it from you.

IDK how to feel about crossdressing James, despite knowing it'll be in Filth (which just sort of in my head is more a James vs Michael in who can do the weird thing (though James' version for Filth is less ridiculous/hilarious than Michael in the XMFC deleted scene.)

School does that! But it's worth the muddling. :-)

There's at least the one more of selkie!James. Possibly two, if I ever write the one in which they do find his family and he chooses to stay with Michael... It's funny, I didn't expect to like that 'verse so much--I don't really do AU for them much, or I didn't use to--but the first one was easy, and this one was easy, and I love their dynamic together.

which just sort of in my head is more a James vs Michael in who can do the weird thing

There's fic there, I am sure...*grin* It's not one of my kinks, but for some reason the opening lines suggested themselves, and I wanted to write something for her, so...we went with it! And I actually do like all their reactions through it, especially Michael's movement from WTF to acceptance to admissions of love. So sincere. <3

I keep debating if it's really worth the muddling right now. At least between my Sociology and Speech class. Speech especially. Having anxiety and having to take a speech class do not work well together especially.

I've seen other people say that don't really do AU for James and Michael and yet in my head, anything written about them technically is AU, even if it involves filming XMFC or something else entirely, since the "canon" they're not really together, James is with Anne-Marie. Or at least that's the way I've always seen it, so I always kind of scratch my head at the "I don't really do AU" when the whole fandom is basically AU. If we didn't write some AU, we'd run out of things to write about I think, too. We'd end up with too many "falling in love while filming" fics. Not that that would be a bad thing necessarily, but at least with AUs whatever they may be, we end up with variety and I think that's important for any fandom.

Not really one of my kinks either, but interesting all the same. Especially when written by you.

Perhaps this semester will be easier? :-/

and yet in my head, anything written about them technically is AU

Yes, agreed. We're always writing about our fictional versions of them. I suppose I think of that as 'canon-AU', though, and the more...fantasy or Regency or what have you as major AU? So the shorthand is just to say that? *shrug* But yes to the variety. Of course there's a limited number of romantic plots in existence, but part of the fun is coming up with new means of elaboration on them!
