Happy Free Comic Book Day!

So, last night, Awesome Husband and I and a group of friends--after spending the afternoon building robots (it was someone's birthday, okay, she wanted to) and eating cupcakes--went to see The Avengers. Which is stupendous. You should go see it. Now. I'll wait.

Anyway, here're some of my thoughts, in the order it occurs to ( Read more... )

Saw it last weekend (and I admit it - I'm slightly loving the fact that we got it earlier...), and it was awesome! YES indeed... :)

AGENT COULSON WHY OH GOD THIS IS LIKE WASH ALL OVER AGAIN THANK YOU JOSS.

PHIL! Say it ain't so! *clings to point 9* (Also, still haven't forgiven Joss for Wash. Joss, you are awesome, but also an evil, horrible man.)

But there aren't many of the love interests in this film. Which is actually sort of refreshing; it's not about that.

I was just thinking about this the other day and realising that. And you're right, it is refreshing - I'm very thankful that they didn't feel it necessary to shoehorn anything like that in (was a smidge worried about Natasha and Hawkeye for a moment, but nothing doing there either). Although contrarily, I was kind of sad that Pepper wasn't in it more...

Oh, and I have been chuckling all week about the whole Hulk and Loki scene, because I am a five-year-old child at heart, clearly! ;)

Yes, I KNOW you got it earlier! Have been horribly jealous! But it's all right now... :-)

Seriously, I was SO hoping one of the bonus scenes would show him having survived. DAMN YOU JOSS WHEDON. (I hide when that moment happens, in Serenity. I mean, I understand...and it's a great emotional gut-punch, but...WASH!! and now PHIL!!) I'm contemplating fic to fix this problem...

Agreed about the refreshing, and also about the lack of Pepper--if they were going to have her, I'd've liked to see her doing something during the crisis! Though I loved the heartbreaking little moment when Tony tried to call her and she wasn't noticing the phone... But anyway, yes, it was lovely to see a "superhero" film in which an Epic Love Story was not only not necessary, but almost deliberately teased and waved away (Natasha and Clint). Applause for Joss, for knowing how to tell a good story beyond those conventional expectations.

Loki's expression, lying there, was just PERFECT. Sort of WTF?! crossed with did that really just happen? with also just a tiny ( ... )

I read an article the other day about how quite a few films now are coming out earlier everywhere else than in the US, but I can't remember if it said what the reason for that was... (Although I am very excited that we're also getting Prometheus a week earlier - not that I'm counting the days or anything!).

I hide when that moment happens, in Serenity.

Me too. Mainly, I think out of the hope that, when I look back at the screen, it might not have happened after all. I can dream! (That's the same part of me that hopes, at the end of XMFC, that the bullet might fly off in a different direction...)

Loki's expression, lying there, was just PERFECT.

That whole scene was just PERFECT. Me and my friend had laughed quite a lot at the bit with Hulk and Thor (after I'd got over the fact that they'd just trashed Grand Central Station, of course), and we didn't think that could be topped. And then it was!

We just went to see it again, because...well, why not? It was that or do laundry!

*grumbles about Prometheus* Yes, well...at least the US got that second bonus scene at the end of Avengers, with the shawarma! I hear other countries did not, so. We have that. (And also, courtesy of cursor_mundi's comment, down there, the wonderful behind-the-scenes moment involving that scene!)

I completely hadn't realized how many Whedon alumni were in The Avengers. Alexis Denisof! Enver Gjokaj! It was like...spot the familiar faces, the second time around. (Also, my pathetic XMFC hope is that this time Erik will realize he's being an idiot, and STAY. He never listens. *sigh*)

Not gonna lie: this is the first time I actually liked Pepper. (In this universe. When not played by Paltrow, I think she is the bamfst bamf in the world, but Paltrow...eh. As Rhodey said, "It's like watching two seals fight over a grape.") And I think her presence really helps explain why Tony's more subdued and stable, and able to finally see his way out. That said, I think Pepper would totally be up for a threesome with Steve. Or Bruce! Since he and Tony are totally snuggle buddies now ( ... )

I liked Pepper more in the first film; in the second one...I don't know what it was, but something felt off about their relationship. Just not...as exciting as it should've been. This one was better; while she wasn't actually doing much, their back-and-forth felt more natural, maybe.

Pepper would totally be up for a threesome with Steve. Or Bruce! Since he and Tony are totally snuggle buddies now. So...are you writing this one? *grin* Or should I? But seriously, the Tony/Bruce (IDK if I see them having The Sex, more like intellectual shared giddiness and falling asleep over lab equipment) was just adorable, in this film.

I did not know that, about that scene! Must go watch again and stare at Evans' face. I do love the sheer unremarkable exhaustion of it, though, and the non-dialogue--though eminently practical, it seems!--works perfectly. Links to interviews? :D :D

I wish to see it again, RIGHT NOW, and I cannot WAIT for the director commentary on the DVD. OMFG, PLEASE JOSS PLEASE. DO WANT. To all of this. (We might go see it ( ... )

Once I clear off this freaking dissertation, there will be so much writing (Well. Once I sober up, because first there will be so much drinking!); I see no reason why cuddly Bruce and Tony should not be among that list. I think they'd eventually progress, after the Most Awkward Courtship Ever, and after Tony has sought permission from Pepper.

And here is THE LINK. "Not without my beard!"

I am trying to make myself actually do my work, and thus am on a strict diet of only one viewing of Avengers a week, because you know that you get nothing done after seeing it. Next week. If I get All The Things done. :( Hopefully this will work.

And apparently, most of the cast can sing very very well! And dance, too. I would profoundly love outtakes, in addition to singalong commentary.

Oh, I sympathize! With the writing and the drinking! I'm still at about two chapters (and a bit), because of Things. (Got asked to run the new Graduate Writing Center, also designing/teaching the fantasy fiction course...so, job market NEXT year, I think!) You MUST be nearly done, right? With all the trees?

I see no reason why cuddly Bruce and Tony should not be among that list. I think they'd eventually progress, after the Most Awkward Courtship Ever, and after Tony has sought permission from Pepper. I now want this more than tea in the mornings. And I love the idea that Pepper would give permission, because of course she would, because she is awesome. And that would be the best Awkward Courtship of all time. (Bruce: "...you want to what?!" Tony: "I thought you knew what I meant about being adventurous!" Bruce: "That's very adventurous." Tony: "It's scientific. You called us a chemical reaction. Let's react. Combine." Bruce: "There might be explosions." Tony: "Sounds fun ( ... )

Love your thoughts and agree with so many of them and I've told every single one of my friends that if they're going I will go with them. I will see it 8-20 more times.
I went to the midnight showing here and I even dressed up as Lady Loki. Not very good costume, because it was my Halloween costume on a budget and had to be work friendly but still costume enough that you could tell it was a costume. A couple people told me it was cool. Not many other people were dressed up in my theater. I loved the balance of action and humor in the movie. Several of my friends left the movie with more love for certain characters and I just love everyone.

Oh, wow, you'll beat us! We'll probably go again tomorrow--depending on how all my grading goes--and more if other friends want to, but if not, we can wait for the Blu-Ray (and then watch it more).

Yay for dressing up! I'm always impressed by people who do. Dedication. :-) I did wear my Avengers shirt, though. Appropriately!

I wanted more Hawkeye, but I'm biased. But Joss did a fantastic job balancing the ensemble cast--everyone had something to do, some character growth, and they managed to grow together by the end. Just brilliant. :D :D

I have several friends who know how excited I was for it and how much I enjoyed it and know how nerdy I can be and they enjoy putting me into a nerdy environment. It's like free entertainment for them.

I've only dressed up once before and that was for the last LOTR movie. Sadly, I didn't have nor do I have any Avengers t-shirts because the only store selling them here didn't have my sizes by the time I thought to buy one. :c

I would love more Hawkeye. I'd also love a Hulk movie with Ruffalo. Joss definitely did a brilliant job balancing the cast. I can't wait to see what else he gives us. :D

At least you're entertaining! (Are you the only Nerd One of the group? At least they will join in the excitement, rather than not care!) (We have a whole Nerd Friend Group. In line there was discussion of Steve/Tony, trashy steampunk paranormal romance, and RPGs, if I remember corrrectly...)

My Avengers shirt came from the young men's section at Target, actually! I've discovered that if I buy a small and wash it, it'll fit perfectly.

A Hulk movie with Ruffalo would be fun, but...there've been so many Hulk movies already. I feel like we need a break, first. Hopefully Joss will do an Avengers sequel, though! It's certainly set up for one, but he's awfully busy...

Oh, sure. It's the one at the very end of the credits; all of them, utterly exhausted, just sitting around a table in a diner, finally eating shawarma. No dialogue. Just eating. While the diner staff cleans up quietly around them.

It's a perfect ending beat for the film. :-)

OMG I loved it so much, and I agree with pretty much every comment you've made here. ;))))

Mark Ruffalo made me care about a character I have no interest in. That was awesome. And I have no words for the awesomeness that is Tony Stark/RDJ. :)))))))

SO MUCH LOVE. I expected I'd like it--I mean, Joss Whedon! the Avengers!--but you never know...but this was WONDERFUL. (Still really wanted Phil to reappear in a hospital bed in one of the bonus scenes though! PHIL!!!)

Agreed about Mark Ruffalo! I've never been much of a Hulk fan, but his comedic timing--and his sense of the character, the desperate balance of fear and anger and wistful desire for normality and the glee at talking to Tony and getting to use his scientific knowledge again--that was so spot-on. And Tony/RDJ, well. ALL THE YES. :D :D
