The timer already running problem this week was due to the puzzles having been prepared on Will J.'s Mac (we don't know WHY this happens but it's some weird Mac thing), when I was ill.

I should have remembered that this could happen. Weird Mac stuff is why I have to send the puzzles from Will S.'s Mac at the NYT to myself, and recopy and re-save them at home on my Windows machine. WIJ sent me the completed files to distribute, and I did recopy the TXT files for the applet (after Peter R. complained about strange Mac format), but assumed the PUZ files were OK.

On an unrelated note...

So, we got married the other day, and our officiant and her partner gave us a bag o' books 'n' stuff. In this bag we found a DVD of Hitchhiker's Guide, a book called Rereadings, a board book of The Owl and the Pussycat (she used this poem in our ceremony)... and Holy Tango of Literature! Sweeet! except we already have a copy, and ours is autographed... it never hurts to have more than one copy, but in the interests of making the world a better place, I'm considering releasing this new copy on bookcrossing.

Well, firstly, congratulations! Secondly, bonus copy of Holy Tango, that's pretty funny. Did that happen because your officiant knew you well enough to know you wanted a copy, but not well enough to know that you'd already bought one? Or was it just a coincidence?

It was partly coincidence and partly a function of her knowing us well enough to know what _kind_ of book we like. :)

Okay, Francis, I'm coming after you at Stamford. I beat your times (in the applet) on four out of the six days you had exact times for.

Okay, but how are your times on paper?

In my rookie appearance at Stamford, I usually finished one to two minutes behind the Tyler, Trip, Stella, etc., contingent. I plan to do better next March, though I haven't been doing a ton of puzzles on paper. Hell, I probably did 1,500 NYT puzzles online before Stamford (cleaned out the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday archives dating back to 1998) and did better than I expected-I think paper practice is a tad overrated. Which is not to say I won't be addressing that stack of puzzle books in the coming six months...

P.S. Don't visit my Crossword Fiend blog when you're not caught up on puzzles. It's totally spoilerrific.
