Just posting because I'm stoked about logging my fastest crossword solving time yet: two minutes even on a Monday Times puzzle. (The July 30th puzzle -- yes, I'm running a bit behind.) My handwriting isn't even all that much crappier than usual.

2:00 on paper? wouldn't that be a record by about 12 seconds? holy shite.

On paper, yes. Still not as fast as Stan, though.

Wasn't Stan's record 2:14 or 2:16, and rpipuzzleguy got an "unofficial" 2:12 or something a few months ago?

Hmm, I don't know. Peter said he remembered Stan finishing in 1:50something, but he could be misremembering. Maybe he's thinking of an unofficial time from Stan.

How long would it take you if you worked from a filled-in answer grid, rather than from clues? I think it would take me over 3 minutes.

I don't know, but it would certainly take less time than actually solving. I can write pretty fast.

Quit it. Your showing at Stamford last year was supposed to be a fluke, so that I'd have a better chance of making the finals in the future.

If I ever reach the finals as many times as you have, then you can start complaining.

How the hell can you do that without getting writer's cramp? Just thinking about being able to solve a puzzle on paper that quickly is making my hands hurt.

(The rest of me, of course, is merely jealous and in awe of your mad puzzle-solving skillz.)

Isn't writer's cramp more of a "length of time spent writing" problem and not so much to do with "speed of writing"?

For me it's both, but then again, I am broken that way.
