The combination of Saturday and mostly sunny weather means that the beach is packed, not that Jamie or Amy minded much as they share lifeguarding duties until the early afternoon. The two had first started working for the city of Santa Monica when they were sixteen. But, while Amy had attended Malibu High School along with Trish, Jamie had attended Pasadena High School with Angie and Lilian, resulting in a friendly rivalry between the girls. That would change somewhat when they started college, Amy, Jamie, Trish and Lilian at UCLA while Angie had ended up at UC Irvine.

And now they all lived at the same apartment complex and they all worked in the same general area of West Los Angeles.

“Hey Ames…”

“Yes, Jamie?”

“Are you going to stay on for the year?”

Amy shrugged, “honestly, I’m not sure. I mean, I’ve worked out a pretty flexible schedule with the Sports Club, but they also pay me more and I get my health insurance through them.” Unzipping her windbreaker, she continued, “not that I mind working here, just that working here part time is a better option for me.”

Jamie nodded her agreement, “I got offered a full time job here, but as a supervisor so I wouldn’t be doing much of this,” she gestured to the lifeguard tower they were seated at. “Plus, the daycare center said that they’d help pay for graduate school if I stayed there full-time.”

“I got one too, a full time job offer, but I already turned them down,” Amy replied, reaching back to secure her hair into a ponytail. “They’re probably going down the totem pole with whoever has been here the longest.”

“Yeah, I don’t mind full-time in the summer…” Jamie trailed off, hanging up her own windbreaker next to Amy’s. “Anyway, you up for hitting the pier later?”

“Sure,” Amy grinned, “and Trish, Eve and I were planning on going to a movie tonight, if you wanted to come with?”

Jamie nodded to that, “Christy is coming home tomorrow, isn’t she?”

Amy chuckled, “yeah… she’s already made arrangements to start the fall semester at UCLA.” A wry smile twisted at the corners of her mouth, “I won’t say it to her, but I kinda thought she would be back.”

“Well, she tried anyway…” Jamie shrugged, “and that’s gotta count for something.”

“Definitely,” Amy agreed, “I’m really proud of her, plus it’ll be nice to have her around more. Mom is still trying to talk her into moving back home… had her room cleaned up and everything.”

Jamie wrinkled her nose, “no offense to your mom because she is pretty damn cool, but, that’s the last place I’d want to be.”

Amy laughed, “Christy agrees and that’s why she’s moving in with you two.” She smirked, “but if she gets to be too much, just send her over to me and Ty.”

Jamie laughed as well, their conversation drifting towards the apartment complex, movies and their plans for the remaining weeks of the summer.
