My TableSummary: Life at the apartment complex proves to be interesting.
Notes: Based slightly off of Friends and follows the post-college life of a group of friends and strangers as they get to know each other over the course of a year in a Santa Monica apartment complex.
Amy Dumas paused in her packing, making sure that the full cardboard box was taped securely before sitting in the now empty living room of the three bedroom house she had shared with her older brother Tyson and her best friend Trish. Today they were moving across the city to an apartment complex within walking distance from the beach. And for the three, all part-time lifeguards, their new location was more than desirable. Granted, it would mean a possible fight with rush-hour traffic to get to their full time jobs at the fitness and health center, but they were all willing to take that risk.
“Is that the last of the living room stuff?”
Amy nodded, wiping her forehead with her shirt sleeve, “yeah that’s the last of it… and thanks again A.J for helping us move.”
The brunette grinned, “No problem and you know it, Ames. Plus? Your brother kinda threatened to beat me up if I didn’t help.”
Amy rolled her eyes, not entirely surprised by that bit of information. “Ty can be like that, from time to time…” And at A.J’s dubious look, she amended: “or entire life since childhood, in your case.”
“Are you still gonna join us on Sunday?”
“Damn straight,” the redhead replied. “I wouldn’t miss a surf-date for the world. Plus, Chris is coming home and I’m sure she’d love to see everyone again.”
A.J smirked a little, “she finally gave up on trying to live up in Seattle, huh?”
Amy nodded, laughing a bit. “More or less. I mean, I guess it’s not that bad up there, but she can’t stand the weather.” She slid a glance towards A.J, “last I knew, she’s supposed to be rooming with Eve and Jamie.”
A.J loaded the box into the packed moving truck, closing the door before he replied. “How is it that we all managed to get apartments at the same complex?”
Amy smirked, “probably because we all happen to know the landlord. That and we’ve all been kinda keeping an eye on when there would be enough openings.” She walked back towards the house, wanting to make sure that they hadn’t missed anything. “Are you coming to our housewarming party next weekend?”
A.J blinked, accepting the bottled water from the redhead. “Why are you all having separate housewarming parties when you could just have one big beach party?”
Amy rolled her eyes, “duh… since we all live on the same floor, we’re having an open-door housewarming party. That way you can go from apartment to apartment but still be at the same party.” She paused, “or at least that’s what us women planned.”
“Are you trying to say that us guys can’t plan a good party?”
“I never said that,” Amy admitted, straight faced. “I just doubt your collective organizational skills.”
“Oh… well, yeah, I guess I’ll be there.” A.J jammed his hands into the back pockets of his jean shorts. “Are we almost ready here?”
Amy nodded slowly, “I think so. I just wanted to make sure that we didn’t forget anything.”
A.J thumbed to the door, “I’m just gonna go sit outside and wait, okay?”
“Okay,” she replied, the redhead already walking down the hallway.
This house, though small, had served them well for their college years and that first year after graduation. Amy recalled how much of an argument that they’d put up with the landlord to let three 19 year-old college students rent a house in the first place. But they had made the best of their years in the area, all the while saving so they could find a better place. And even though an apartment wasn’t their first choice, at least they would be pretty familiar with most of the neighbors.
And it was because of that they’d signed the lease, committing to one full year at the complex.
