On Sunday, the surf club heads to Huntington Beach, though Amy sits out half of the morning due to personal reasons, but even that won’t prevent her from enjoying the waves once in a while. Christy, on the other hand, decides to opt out entirely, the two sisters watching as A.J and Alex tackle one particularly challenging wave.

“Those two are going to get themselves seriously hurt,” Christy remarks, A.J’s sunglasses shading her eyes.

“Possibly,” Amy replies, the older of the two sporting Alex’s sunglasses, digging her bare feet into the soft sand, “But they do know what they’re doing,” a beat passed, “most of the time.”

Christy shrugged, “maybe…. So, did you have an encounter with a vacuum?”

Amy arched an eyebrow, “and since when did you turn into Ty?”

Christy smirked, “maybe since Ty called me, while you two were in the hallway, to bitch and complain.”

Amy shook her head, “I thought I had covered all of them.” And then she tapped her sister’s neck, “Ty hasn’t gotten on your case about that?”

Christy scoffed, “why do you think I’ve been avoiding him? It wouldn’t be so bad if your stupid boyfriend hadn’t taken a picture and sent it to Ty.”

“He’s not my boyfriend.”

“Could have fooled me.”

“Which is the point,” Amy said pressing her lips together. “After Matt gets lost, Alex and I will go back to being friends.”

Christy spat out the water she had been drinking, “and then what, you take a one-way trip back to the land of Denial? Ames, open your eyes. He’s crazy about you and don’t try to tell me you don’t have feelings for him.”

Amy sighed, pushing the sunglasses up so that they were resting above her forehead. “That’s not the point…. Aside from you and J, he’s one of my closest friends.” She shook her head, “I’m not willing to risk that.”

“That didn’t stop you before.”

“That was different, Chris.”

Christy blinked, “how? When you two were in high school…”

Amy picked at the beach towel, “that was high school. We were teenagers. It’s not like he didn’t have girlfriends.”

“That he would ditch if you wanted to hang out with him,” Christy reminded her older sister. “What else are you worried about?”

“Relationships don’t work for me,” Amy said quietly. “And I’m not just talking about Matt.”

Christy sighed, keeping her comments about Matt to herself. “But this could be different.”

Amy shook her head, “or it could not be and I could end up losing one of my closest friends.”

Christy nudged her sister, “and since when have you been afraid of taking a risk?”

Amy smiled dryly, “since it could possibly jeopardize one of the better friendships I’ve ever had.”

“I kinda get what you’re saying but at the same time? I really don’t think you have anything to worry about.” Christy held up a hand when her sister started to protest, “Maybe neither one of you has had the best track record lately but he’s different with you. Or at least that’s what Jamie tells me.”

“But that could change…. Knowing my luck, it probably will. I mean, he could meet someone between now and whenever Matt finally gets a clue.” Her expression darkened a little, “he could meet someone prettier, smarter…”

Christy frowned, “just because Matt said those things, it doesn’t make them true. He doesn’t have a brain anyway, so you can’t take his opinion for what it’s worth.” She paused, giving her sister a one-armed hug. “At least think about it, okay? I think you and Alex work.”

Amy considers her sister’s words, having heard similar from Jamie in the past week. And maybe she is being too pessimistic but she also can’t help it because she doesn’t want to make another costly mistake.
