When the curse was broken, his memories came flooding back. So many memories, of centuries of adventures. Of the man he had been, once upon a time. In an instant, the comfort of ignorance had been stolen from him, leaving behind a cruel knowledge. He is not only Doctor Whale, the kindly but skirt chasing doctor of Storybrooke; He is also Takezo Kensei.

Doctor Whale heals others. He has saved lives, he has delivered babies. Takezo Kensei was a warrior, incredibly capable and handy with a sword. He took lives, and saved people. Kensei has a story, as everyone in Storybrooke does, he is a warrior who defeated several trials and conquered them all, who fell in love with a beautiful Princess, and defeated a dragon to save her life as well as the entire kingdom, and according to legend, lived happily ever after.
Doctor Whale wishes his story would be that simple.

It isn’t.

As the memories come back, he remembers another life beside the legend. For Takezo Kensei was more than a storybook character- he was a real man. A man with super human powers who lived for over four hundred years; for Takezo Kensei the man had the ability to regenerate cells at will; allowing him to heal from any injury, and even to stop aging. He remembers different aliases that he had used- Richard Sanders and Adam Monroe are particularly vivid. He remembers his wives, for he is many times a widower. He has seen the world change and grow; he has lived all over the world and had almost every occupation under the sun. Once he even went to medical school.

Thoughts of being buried alive, when he suffocated and died a million times, only to regenerate and live to die again haunt him. How is he supposed to get over that?

Doctor Whale is not a saint, but the Kensei’s sins make the good doctor’s pale in comparison. Kensei had killed and manipulated. He had tried to destroy the world and failed.

He recalls losing his power and falling to dust, a final death for the real Kensei that was. But legends never die. If anything, they just get dusty.

The truth has cut him deeper than any blade ever could.

Doctor Whale is just a reflection left behind. He isn’t the man who caused the legend, but the result of that man’s life. The others in Storybrooke have it easy. They only have one identity to reconcile along with their newly remembered ones. His baggage is more complicated than that.

Shit, he finally understood all the hubbub people made about that stupid Pocahontas movie.

Today, in Storybrooke, everyone is mourning something they have lost. Most are regretting the years that they have lost to the curse. Doctor Whale is mourning that the curse is lost.

He’s no better than an illusion, and his pride won’t let him stand for that.

He will make someone pay. Drawing on the same skills that he had to lead thousands of warriors in feudal Japan, Doctor Whale gathered his fellow citizens together. Regina would pay. And he would lead everyone to a better life outside of this horrid town.

Now was as good of time as any to become a man of his own, no longer a prison to the person or the myth of the legend.
