Summary: When life changes, you gotta adapt.
Once, her life had been rather ordinary. Rose had been a simple shop girl, living an ordinary life in the midst of a city filled with thousands of other people, all living simple lives. Things had changed, suddenly and unexpectedly when she wasn’t expecting it. She’d zoomed through the galaxy, seeing a million different things that were most decidedly not normal. And in that crazy, topsy turvy, absurd life, Rose had felt safe.
Now, she was trying to readapt to being normal; not that things were truly normal, mind you, but even working with Torchwood didn’t compare with life with the Doctor. Nothing really could.
Rose had her family- a father, a mother, and a little sister; friends and colleagues, by the score. Still, she felt this sad ache of not fitting in, of feeling lost. Even with all she’d gained, Rose had lost her best friend.
Some days were better than others. Some times she could focus her mind on the task at hand or concentrate on everything that was going well in her life. And some days, she was a crying snotty mess, because once more she’d googled “the doctor” or “doctor who”, to come up with many, many hits, but not one MD that specialized in the field of Time Travel.
Sometimes she’d look around in the crowd; hoping that in some way, some how, the Doctor had found another crack through time, and had come back to see her. Once, she followed a chap all over London, only to realize he looked nothing at all like the doctor, not by a long shot.
She’d picked up a paper- there were rumors that William and Kate Middleton would be announcing their engagement soon- and started to read it while riding on the tube, when she saw a familiar face standing across the aisle; a face she knew as well as her own.
The same face the Doctor wore when they first met, before his regeneration.
Rose watched him; both exhilarated and scared at once.
He got off at the next stop, and Rose followed him.
After five blocks, he turned around and stared at her for a moment. “Mind your own bloody business, will you?” He growled.
She must have blinked for an instant, because suddenly, he was gone.

Claude couldn’t remember when the last time someone had looked at him like that. The blonde had stared at him- not with revulsion, or hate, but like she knew him.
And he definitely didn’t know her. A face like that? He’d remember a face like that.
It was right fair payback that he was following her, Claude told himself. She’d followed him for blocks; he’d had that strange little tingle that trickled down that spine, telling him he was being watched. And he was invisible- a courtesy she hadn’t allowed him, thank you.
Still, a couple of times, the girl turned around and stared, as if she’d seen him, even though she possibly couldn’t. She saw right through him, literally.
Claude was still adapting to being visible. It had been a choice, after the group in Texas split up and the betrayal of that little snit with the horn rimmed glasses, to stay invisible. So what if people thought him dead? Better dead than alive with friends like that. Staying invisible did nothing to improve his feelings about the human race; it was amazing what people would do to each other when they thought no one was watching. After seeing Peter be reunited with his family, Claude realized that having someone care about you could be a good thing. On some level.
So he’d journeyed back to London. London was safe. Comfortable.
He followed her home; watched her fix dinner, talk on the phone, and watch a programme or two on the telly. And then he watched her sleep.
During the middle of the night, the fire alarm rang. Turning visible again, he tried to wake her up.
“Huh? What?” She replied, wiping her eyes.
”RUN!” Claude said, grabbing her hand as the sprinklers went off.
Her hand fit perfectly in his.
