As a young girl, Chloe Sullivan spent hours upon hours in her Metropolis apartment pretending to be Dorothy Gale. She would twist and twirl her way around the three-bedroom apartment, belting the score to The Wizard of Oz at the top of her lungs, like a miniature Judy Garland.
She first saw the movie when she was five years old. It was only on TV once a year then, and it was a big family event. The flying monkeys scared her cousin Lois; but Chloe wasn’t fazed in the least. Oz was a magical world, and she wanted to be there.
Her obsession over The Wizard of Oz grew as Chloe got older. It was her favorite make believe game, one that she played after school each day. The ugly throw pillows on the couch became flying monkeys to fight. The faded yellow carpet in the apartment was Chloe’s own yellow brick road. An old blue gingham work shirt of Gabe’s became her “Dorothy Dress”. She fussed and fussed until her light blond hair became long enough to plait into Dorothy’s trademark braids. Santa brought Chloe her own stuffed Toto and sparkly ruby red shoes.
She cast her friends and family into the roles- Her Mom was Glinda; her Dad the Wizard. Uncle Sam was the Cowardly Lion. Lois was an utility player, playing any role that wasn’t filled at that particular moment; except the Wicked Witch. Lois refused to play the Wicked Witch after the time that Chloe tried to throw the heavy coffee table on top of her; to serve as the house falling on the Wicked Witch.
After Chloe’s mother left, all she wanted to do fly over the rainbow and go to Oz. Things had to be better there.
By the time she moved to Smallville, Chloe had read the entire Oz library and met all the wonderful characters that Frank L. Baum had created. She had a whole little collection of Oz memorabilia; most of which she kept boxed up in her closet when they reached the new house. She was a teenager, and didn’t have time for make believe games as she used to.
One of the first things she did, however, was sneak off and find a hay bale on a small farm outside of town, and sing “Over the Rainbow” quietly like Dorothy did in the film.
Now Chloe was 18 years old, and a high school graduate. A girl truly on the verge of becoming a woman. She looked down at the town that had grown to become her home, and noticed how tiny and beautiful the buildings seemed from up here.
“You okay, Chlo?” Clark was concerned as he looked down at his girlfriend. He’d taken a big step; a step that he hadn’t talked to his parents or Pete previously.
He had told Chloe his secret. While sitting on a hay bale in his loft, he told her about Krypton; about the caves, Dr. Swann, and Lana’s mysterious connection, about the meteor rocks and his powers.
She hadn’t been fazed. She simply walked over and sat down in Clark’s lap, hugging him tightly.
“I always knew there was something special about you.” She said with a laugh.
“Does…Does this change us?” Clark asked, looking down at her sweet face. He’d been reluctant to tell her, not wanting to loose her. There was something about being with Chloe. She was his best friend; but she was also this girl, who made his blood boil in ways that he’d never thought it could. She was comfort and desire, all wrapped up in a 5’4 package. With Chloe, Clark felt like he belonged. If he lost her…
“Of course not.” She said, looking up into his eyes. “I’ve finally caught you after like five years of pursuit. I’m not letting something as simple as you being kin to E.T. keep us apart. I love you, Clark.” She reached up and closed the distance between them, covering his lips with her own.
“I love you too, Chloe.” Clark said, holding her close.
She was silent for a moment. “So what were all these powers again? Super Speed, Super Hearing, Super Sexiness?”
“Chloe!” Clark blushed. He blinked, trying to keep his heat vision in check. “That’s not really a power.”
“So you’re just naturally that way?”
“Chloe!” Clark tried to think of mud, to think of anything that might get her mind on another track.
“Did you say you could fly?”
He nodded. “A little. I’ve just started to…..I can’t go very high or fast..”
“Take me flying, Clark.” She said, pulling him to his feet.
“I’ve never…If I fall…”
“You won’t.” She assured. “I know that you’ll keep me safe, Clark. You always have. So let’s…fly.”
They walked down the stairs and stood outside the Kent barn. Clark swept Chloe up into a fireman’s carry and took off for the sky.
Now Chloe looked down at Smallville from her boyfriend’s arms. It was like a whole new world up here, with endless possibilities and hopes for the future.
She had finally made it over the rainbow.
