Oh, for heaven's sake...every single external drive out there has a HORDE of people saying it's atrocious, that a different product is better.

Western Digital is bad...no wait, it's good ( Read more... )

Maxtor does suck. We have one of these, and it works well:

I hear and obey, oh wise mistress. So I went looking and found this baby here, which looks fabulous and bizarrely cheap, especially compared with this and this.

The cheapest one seems like the best overall package, newest technology, and lightest weight...so why is it the cheapest?

So confused...

Because the first one is sold by a different company (Computer Brain) than the others (Compusa). Compusa probably marks their prices up a *lot*.

On the other hand, if you want to burn audio cds from your external drive, I would recommend getting a 150gb or lower. Usually ex drives over that size are actually two hard drives in one case, but they act as a single drive, which means when you copy files over part of one file can end up on one disk and the other part will end up on the other. When burning audio cds (and probably any other type of cd/dvd burning) flipping back and forth between the two causes a small hang in the program which will corrupt the file on the disk. Of course you can solve that by just copying whatever you're burning to your internal hard drive and then deleting it after you're done, so it's up to you. You know how much space you need and what you'll be using it for. ^_^

See, I've never had an issue with Maxtor and I have two of them, one of which is going on four years old and still working as well as the day I got it. All I know is my roomie had her Western Digital one break within the first year and I've never heard of Le Cie. That about does it from this end.
