#AugWriMo as a way to kick my lazy bone

Aug 06, 2010 09:04

July was kind of slow. At least slow on my writing.
In theory I am revising (but I'm really changing everything from plot line to characters) a young adult fantasy I started last NaNoWriMo. But after reading Donald Maass Writing the Breakout Novel I was sure my story lacked tension, conflict and it was too small to attract readers. So now I'm ( Read more... )

Keep it up. I will skip NaNo this year. I will do nothing with the story I wrote last year.

I've finished two NaNos, 2008 and 2009.
The 2008 one is a cute MG about a girl with an autistic brother and how she deals with it. Not really publishable, it lacks conflict and tension but it was great to write. With what I know now, I'd write it differently. I may do some time, because I love the voice, and the characters are so sweet.
The 2009 is this one, and I'll be working on it for a long time. Don't know when I'll finish it, but I just hope it's a bit more publishable than the last one :).
I always say I won't do NaNo and finish writing something just because I like the kick in the pants, the tension. The need to report the number of words. Don't know what I'll do this year but got an idea for a humorous MG and I want to have fun!

Sht, don't tell anyone, yesterday I didn't write, but today I'll double. Was out all day long at my mom's :).

Excellent news! I'm always interested in how writers work. Many writers draft the entire novel and then polish - I'm interested to see that you write a few chapeters then polish and so on.

Thanks for sharing.

I've been doing differently in each project I undertook.
First one I wrote and thought I was so brilliant I didn't need to polish. So now it's buried in a CD and no one will ever see it LOL.
Then second one I started revising after writing and saw how much it sucked. It's buried too.
And so on. Now I've tried a different approach, just not to be ashamed of what I write when I undertake the revisions. Don't really know which is my method yet though. I'm just trying. Will keep you posted on new methods I find ;)
