First he was writing a story and then it's coming true and then it turns out he may or may not have just been a character in Zane's story or even Zane might have just been made up entirely in this story and I have no idea what's really real and then THAT ENDING
Have to do some checking, but the head wound on Scratch makes me think he's who wakes up from the accident, and in returning to the lake we regain control of the "real" Wake. Maybe.
Also, YMMV on the "it's not a lake, it's an ocean," but I take it as a realization rather than something he wrote to make true.
