Day 2 - Favorite character.
"Yes... and what are they without the Force? Take the greatest Jedi Knight, strip away the Force, and what remains? They rely on it, depend on it, more than they know. Watch as one tries to hold a blaster, as they try to hold a lightsaber, and all you will see is nothing more than a woman -- or a man. A child."
Kreia. Jedi Master. Sith Lord. Exile. Mentor. Lying liar who lies. One of the best female characters the video game scene has ever seen, and probably will ever see for a very long time.
A lot of people who play Knights of the Old Republic II write her off because of her "bitchy" personality without ever paying attention to what she's actually saying. These people are stupid and should feel stupid. Kreia is easily one of the most well-written and nuanced NPCs ever created. There aren't many other games out there that actually make a point of developing the main character's mother figure.
Kreia is the main bad guy in the game, your primary source of exposition, a gigantic liar, and probably the one of the characters who will actually make you stop and think about the consequences of your actions in these kinds games, unless you're one of those aforementioned stupid people. She exposes the hypocrisy of the philosophies of both the Jedi and the Sith. To her, the self-less benevolence of the Jedi only serves to make they help weaker, for instead of learning how to deal with problems on their own, they only learn dependence. The Jedi of that era feel that only their way is right -- it's almost like the medieval churches, the way they instantly denounce anything as heresy that doesn't fit within their limited view of galaxy and the Force. The very idea that a Jedi chose to live without a connection to the Force and became stronger for it is so unbelievably beyond them. The petty cruelty espoused by the Sith is stupid no matter which way you swing it; she's into subtler, more deceptive acts. Throughout the course of the game, she manages to take out the old, arrogant Masters, destroy the remaining Sith Lords, end Atris's corrupted teachings before they ever began, ferreted out the enemies of the Republic, and paved the way for a better Order, all by manipulating the major and minor characters in the game. Was she a bitch about it? Fuck yeah. But what she did was ultimately for the betterment of the galaxy.
Chris Avellone, who I have a gigantic writing crush on, created her basically as a reaction to all the things about the Star Wars universe he absolutely hates, and it shows so hard I can't even.
(Apparently, creating games as a reaction to hating things in games is a common thing with Mr. Avellone, as anyone who's played like an hour of Planescape: Torment can tell you. Cranium rats, more XP for talking and learning instead of fighting, the way death is handled, what can change the nature of a man, etc. etc. etc. There's no way Kreia isn't an incarnation of Ravel Puzzlewell.)
The most prominent example of this is her main motivation in the game: killing the Force. She hates the Force. Hates it. She values most is self-determination and free will, being able to manipulate and control. To her, the Force uses people as pawns, wasting people's lives in some weird balancing act. It's a cruel, uncaring god. It's a fate you can't fight. The thought that she doesn't have any control is anathema, and the galaxy would be better off without being slaves to its whims. The Exile is the ideal of her philosophy: here is someone who willingly cast off their connection to the Force and lived out a life free from its machinations.
I think the thing I love about her the most is how much of a teacher she is. As a Jedi, she was a historian. As a Sith, she instructed Sion and Nihilus. As an exile, she is your mentor. Such a huge part of the game is her teaching you, manipulating events to make you stronger, make you face and overcome your past. All that she does to you and for you is without malice. Even at the end, before the final battle, she takes the time to answer your questions. Even her defeat is seen as to what every teacher aspires: that final surpassing of the student over the master.
SHE'S SO FUCKING AWESOME, YOU GUYS. There's no way I'm doing her justice, but a;sdlfkjas;d I love her so much I can't even. ♥ ♥ ♥
---
I'm also a fan of this gigantic loser, because someone out there has to like him.
Man, what stupid hair.
This is Mical, aka the Disciple, another one of your companions in KOTOR 2. No one fucking likes him. No one. I think I am of maybe five people in the entire fandom who actually thinks he's a pretty cool guy. He may be even more vilified than Kreia, but I may be wrong about that because a lot of guys never bother to play as chicks even though the Exile is canonly female and so never pick him up on their journeys and get the chance to know him/hate him. He's only available on the girl files; guys get Brianna, the Handmaiden, who is way more useful than him, if only because her Jedi class actually fits in with her first class. Both start as soldiers, but Mical is trained as a consular (a caster class), whereas Brianna is a guardian (a fighter class). Much rage ensues if you level him up without talking to him first. She also gives better combat bonuses than him.
He just can't win.
Since people discount him for being a cheap knockoff of Brianna and never talk to him because he isn't Atton, no one ever realizes what a badass he is. He's a trained medic, a (competent!) Republic spy, and a historian whose insight is on par with Kreia's. He's one of the only characters in the game who figures out what Revan was really doing during the Mandalorian wars. The first time you meet him he's just chilling out in the middle of the ruins of the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. The ruins full of awful difficult-to-kill bug things you just had to slaughter your way through. Everyone else who's ventured in has had to go in groups, including you.
And he's there by himself.
Fuck yeah.
He's also the nicest character in the game. Seriously. T3-M4 is also nice, but it's a robot okay, it doesn't count. He's also probably the only character in the game who doesn't actively hate another character. Seriously! Kreia hates everyone, everyone hates Kreia, Atton hates Mical, Mira hates Hanharr, Bao-Dur hates Mandalore, HK-47 hates G0-T0, G0-T0 hates Bao-Dur's remote, Brianna hates Visas... it goes on and on and on.
oh yeah and Kreia mindrapes him like every other cutscene, but that's really par for the course when it comes to your party members. Poor guy. Poor everyone.
WHAT A WONDERFUL GAME.
But seriously, there are so many other characters I love. Everyone in KOTOR I and II, pretty much everyone in the two Mass Effect games, everyone ever in Mother 3, Barry motherfucking Burton the best character in Resident Evil and anyone who tells you differently is in denial, Tifa Lockhart (who has been my hero since I was seven years old)... I could just keep naming names, but this I am tired and I'm going to stop right here.
