[Fic] Heaven on Wheels 1/?

May 16, 2011 10:42

I apologize humbly that I am posting the first part and then not posting more again until the 31st, but that is what happens when one does not have the internet at home. XD Read the notes, please. And please comment if you like it! :)
About the title: I really couldn't think of anything else to call it; since this is from Arthur's POV mostly I think Arthur would consider Merlin as being a heavenly angel(or body) in a wheelchair, so that's why the fic is called this.

Title: Heaven on Wheels
Chapter One
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin, background Lance/Gwen
Rating: NC-17 over all (PG-13 this part)
Warnings: Modern AU, slight angst, touch of fluff (sap?); very romantic-like atmosphere, mostly in Arthur's POV but there are times when the POV changes. (Series 3 wasn't out at the time when I started writing this!)

Summary: This one caught his eye; not because the man was in a wheelchair, not because he could see just why he was in said chair (legs cut off at the knees) or even his slight frame… it was his eyes, his ears, his cheekbones, and his endearing smile.

Notes: This is one of those fics that would not leave me alone until I wrote it, and I'm also pleased with how it turned out. I don't have any firsthand experience so I do hope that I don't step on any toes. If I do then point it out and I will see about correcting it (and if I can't then I humbly apologize). This idea came to me after reading a fic about Merlin being deaf ( He Was Steeping, by miafic) and one of Merlin being asthmatic ( Like Grabbing My Heart and Taking My Breath, by Pandatwirls). I do hope that this is a worthy addition to the genre. (More notes at end of chapter.)
Disclaimer: I don't own these characters; honest!

Serving customers wasn't the highlight of Arthur Pendragon's job; flirting with them, however, was.

He wasn't a man-whore, though, whatever anyone thought. At least that was how he thought of himself. He didn't go to bed with every attractive customer that came into the coffee shop, nor did he make lewd comments to those he only found charming or sweet (like little old ladies). He did have his limits.

There had been only one instance where he had asked someone out while making their coffee and ringing up their order, and that had been Sophia Maureen. It had only lasted two months, and it'd been about seven months ago. Since then, he'd tampered down his flirting lest another Sophia happened his way.

Gwen Smith, his friend and co-worker, was sweet enough, but he wouldn't dare embark on his best friend's girl. They mostly teased each other, in a friendly way, and sometimes they'd lean on each other when things got tough. He'd even babysat her younger brother Tristan when she desperately needed someone to watch him.

"That'll be three fifty, please," Gwen said to the customer she was serving, handing him his flavored coffee. The man paid for it quickly and quietly before leaving, not even saying thanks or anything. "Have a nice day," she intoned automatically with a smile.

"Ungrateful arse," Arthur mumbled after the man left.

"Don't let the ruder ones get to you, Arthur," said Gwen. "Some people just don't know when they're being rude."

Arthur decided not to argue, since she was most likely right. He had known Gwen for nearly four years now (worked together for two of those years; she'd helped him get this job), and he had learned rather quickly that usually when she spoke she was more right than not. She also had more experience when it came to working in a coffee shop, too. Arthur, meanwhile, was studying at Uni in order to start his own business. He was also a football nut, but then again, who wasn't?

Then, after just finishing his lunch break and getting back behind the counter, the door opened and his first customer for the afternoon entered. When he looked up, his heart nearly leapt out of his mouth.

Because this one caught his eye; not because the man was in a wheelchair (and an old fashioned one, not powered), not because he could see just why he was in said chair (legs cut off at the knees) or even his slight frame fixed into it; but it was his face, his eyes, his ears, his cheekbones, and his endearing smile. Arthur found himself leaning forward on the counter with effortless grace as he scrutinized the beautiful man. He opted to pour on the charm, not curbing it in any way like he normally did.

"Welcome to Caffeine Café, what can I get you?" Arthur gave him one of his best winning smiles.

"Er," said the lovely man as he eyeballed the menu on the counter (and by god, the man had such long eyelashes!). "Do you have anything lactose free?"

"We certainly do"-you gorgeous creature-"Would that be decaf or would you like a bit of kick to your coffee?"

He heard Gwen behind him give a wounded groan.

The man smiled, and Arthur knew his heart was forever lost. It had been such a long time since anyone was able to make him feel this way with just a look and a smile.

"I would love a bit of kick to my coffee, if you please," the man smiled sheepishly.

"Ah! You see, Gwen," declared Arthur, "a polite customer! They do in fact exist."

Gwen giggled into her hand. "Yes, I see."

Arthur gave him one of his other best smiles as he said, "Dairy-free coffee with a kick coming right up!"

While making the gorgeous man's drink, Gwen sidled up to him and nudged his side.

"Well?" she whispered.

"Well what?" he said.

"He's very cute, isn't he?"

"Way to state the obvious, Guinevere," Arthur snorted. He wasn't about to argue with her on that point, even if she was acting like such a gossiping old maid.

Before she could reply, Arthur finished making the coffee and turned to hand it to the man, leaning over the counter a ways.

"That'll be two fifty," he said.

"Three," Gwen hissed the correction into Arthur's ear, but he just hushed her, keeping his gaze on the man's lovely face. The man dug out his wallet to pay, and when their fingers brushed as he handed it over Arthur felt heat pool at the back of his neck. The man's cheeks bloomed a brilliant shade of pink as well. Arthur almost dropped the money as they stared at each other, the world seemingly condensing to just them. Then Gwen coughed behind him and time started up again.

"Uh, have a great day, then," said Arthur, finally placing the man's money into the till.

The man smiled sweetly. "Thanks, you too." Then, after setting the coffee carefully between his thighs, he turned his wheelchair around and coasted toward the door.

Gwen nudged him again, and he looked at her with annoyance. "What?"

"I know that look," she said. "You're besotted."

Arthur rolled his eyes. "Yeah, right."

"You are! And don't try telling me otherwise. Last time you looked at someone like that you ended up dating them."

"And look what happened," he argued, although he had no idea why he was.

"You weren't to know Sophia would cheat on you," said Gwen kindly. "So, go on then, before he's disappeared out the door. You might never see him again if he decides the coffee you made him is crap."

Arthur hesitated, but only for a minute, because just before the man was out the automatic door he looked back at Arthur with a sweet expression and a hopeful smile.

"I'll be right back," said Arthur, and Gwen smiled knowingly.

When he walked toward him, the young man's face split into a huge, pleased grin and easily turned his chair round to face him.

"Hello again," the man said, dimpling.

"Hello," said Arthur, suddenly a bit shy. Which was strange, since he was rarely shy. "I, uh, feel compelled to introduce myself to you, which is quite odd since I have a nametag and all, er…" Arthur took a steadying breath and ran a hand through his hair, and all the while the man watched him patiently and with mirth-filled eyes. "I'm Arthur. Arthur Pendragon." He held his hand out to shake and the man took it. He had such long, lovely fingers and a delicate wrist, Arthur couldn't help noticing.

"I'm Merlin," the man said softly, smile bright. "Merlin Emerson." His eyes were so blue, so blue and expressive, and his lashes so long and dark.

"A pleasure to meet you, Merlin," said Arthur. Their hands stayed locked much longer than the normal handshake, and Arthur felt the urge to lift Merlin's hand up and kiss the back of it, but he held himself back. He didn't want to seem too forward. "Er, I hope that your coffee will be to your satisfaction."

"I'm sure it will," Merlin beamed. "Thank you."

There was silence for a few moments as they drank in the sight of each other.

Then someone walked in and it brought them back to reality: being which that they've been blocking the entrance the entire time. They moved away from the door to finish their conversation, both a little embarrassed.

"Er, anyway, I was wondering if you'd like to-you know-do something some time."

Merlin's eyes twinkled. "Asking me on a date already, are we? My, you work fast."

"Er," Arthur repeated, rubbing the back of his neck. "It doesn't have to be an actual date per se… could just be a friendly outing, just to get to know each other better." He hoped that the look they'd shared hadn't been his imagination.

"Which is a date," said Merlin, nearly laughing.

Arthur waved a dismissing hand in the air, "Technicalities! But if you're willing to give it a shot…"

"You don't even know if I'm gay!" Merlin said, still on the verge of laughter. "You're just assuming."

Arthur tried not to let that fact bother him as he said, "Am I correct in my assumption, though?"

"Partially," said Merlin. "I consider myself bisexual."

"So yes, then?" Arthur grinned. He felt more at ease now, and the smile Merlin returned made his heart flutter.

Merlin let out a soft, amused laugh. "You're quite determined, aren't you? Well, seeing how I have nothing better to do this weekend, and it had been years since my last date, I guess it's a yes. I could do worse, I suppose."

"Brilliant!" said Arthur. He pulled out his mobile phone then and pressed a few buttons. "May I have your… wait, what did you mean by that?"

"Uh, nothing," Merlin said, ducking his head in embarrassment.

"I'll have you know I'm very sought after."

"Oh?" a smile tugged at Merlin's lips.

"I'm not just a pretty face. I have many outstanding qualities, which I'm sure you have sensed when our eyes met. I'm good at fencing, I'm brilliant at football, and I'm working on getting a degree. I am an excellent catch, the best person you could ever ensnare!"

"And very humble too, I see," said Merlin, eyes twinkling.

"Oh, extremely!" Arthur grinned. "I don't normally toot my own horn. I have others to do that for me."

The sparkle in Merlin's eyes never left, nor had his smile, but the intensity of his stare increased. "No doubt that your friends are very forthcoming in praising your virtues. So if I agree to this date, I'll make many women and men weep with jealousy?"

"You would be terribly envied and hated," Arthur agreed.

Merlin nodded as if it were to be expected, and let out a mock troubled sigh. "I suppose I'll just have to endure sharing the spotlight with you."

"Now we're getting somewhere!" Arthur laughed. "So, what's your mobile number?"

**

"Way to go, Romeo," said Gwen as she sat across from Arthur with her coffee. The afternoon slowed down enough so that they could take their quick fifteen minute break before the last few hours before closing time. "I couldn't be any prouder."

Arthur glanced up from the football magazine he'd been reading to acknowledge he'd heard her and then went back to it. The bridge of his nose and edges of his cheekbones went pink.

"That better not've been sarcasm."

"Oh, no, of course not!" said Gwen, hands flailing and eyes wide in her exasperation. "I really am proud of you!"

Arthur made a small 'hmm' noise as he lifted his coffee to his lips, eyes still on the magazine. It wasn't just the articles that he liked to read; there were also the cute, fit men in small shorts.

"I mean," Gwen went on, "I never thought you'd go for his type."

Arthur laid the magazine down on the table and gave her his full attention. "His type?" he echoed eyebrows up.

"Oh, I only meant-" Gwen flailed again. "You know! Skinny, pale, um…"

Arthur's eyes narrowed. "Handicapped?"

Gwen's entire face went red in humiliation. She flailed even wilder. "I wasn't going to say that!" she squeaked.

"No, but you were thinking it. You honestly think I'd mind about something like that? The poor guy's lost half his legs, Gwen! It's not like he had planned on it!"

"I know!" she sobbed. "I meant that I'm glad you don't mind!"

Arthur pursed his lips, studying her sad, teary-eyed face before nodding and said, "Right, well… good."

After a few moments of awkward silence, realizing he wasn't really taking in what he was reading anyway, just staring at some footie player's bottom (and really, he didn't need to anymore now that he had a potential boyfriend, right?), Arthur closed the magazine and looked back at Gwen.

"Sorry," he said softly. "I should've known you of all people wouldn't have any prejudice hang-ups. I didn't mean to snap."

"It's okay, Arthur, I understand." Gwen wiped at her eyes with a napkin. "I just don't express my thoughts on matters too well sometimes."

Arthur reached out and patted her hand. "You're fine. I just overreacted."

Gwen smiled, and thus their friendship was swiftly repaired, of little to no damage.

Arthur met Merlin at the restaurant of Merlin's choice for their first date. It should've surprised him when Merlin ordered a vegetarian dish, but it didn't; not much, anyway. But what did surprise him was the amount of spicy food. When Arthur ordered the ribs special, Merlin looked to be amused more than annoyed.

"I had a feeling you'd be a meat and potatoes man," Merlin said.

"And I had a feeling you'd eat like a rabbit. Honestly, Merlin, think you've got a big enough side salad there?"

Merlin chewed a bit of lettuce and tomato before swallowing. Arthur watched Merlin's throat bob and licked his dry lips.

"Could use some croutons," Merlin deadpanned, and the tone was so perfect it made Arthur laugh.

"So, Merlin," he said after they've eaten quite a bit, "What do you do? I mean job-wise."

"I'm a lead writer for the local paper," Merlin answered without a pause.

"Oh? I guess I'll have to start reading the paper more often, then."

Merlin ducked his head, cheeks pinking. "If you like."

"As you already know, I work at Caffeine Café, but it's only until I graduate from Uni. Then I'll be starting my own business in computers and technology."

"Really? That's cool. I like any kind of technology stuff, but ask me how to fix a computer and I'm stumped."

Arthur smiled as he forced down a laugh for Merlin's choice of word. Then he berated himself for even thinking it was funny and gulped down his Diet Coke.

They ordered dessert afterwards; Arthur had cheese cake and Merlin had a small slice of cherry pie.

"I hate to be so blunt," Arthur began as he licked his fork clean, "but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind coming over to my place tonight."

Merlin's cheeks burned and he kept his eyes on his pie. "To do what, pray tell?"

"Let's see," Arthur pretended to think. "We could watch a DVD or listen to some music or… whatever strikes our fancy." Arthur winked, making clear what was on his mind.

"Whatever sounds good," Merlin said boldly, even while he was blushing madly.

"I don't live too far from here, so… shall we?" Arthur hoped that he didn't sound too eager, but Merlin just smiled and nodded so he counted that as a good sign that Merlin felt just as eager.

Arthur paid for their food and soon they were out the door in the crisp autumn air. It had got chillier since this morning, and Arthur noticed that Merlin only had a light jacket on and was shivering a little. Arthur did the gentlemanly thing by taking off his scarf (which he'd worn mostly for looks anyway) and wrapped it around Merlin's neck like a mother hen. Merlin didn't seem to mind at all, blushing and stammering his thanks.

"Wish I had a hat to give you," said Arthur. "Because I wouldn't want to see those lovely ears of yours get frost bite."

"I'm fine, thanks," Merlin whispered, lowering his gaze shyly. It was so adorable Arthur nearly leaned down to kiss his cheek, but then Merlin was rolling away so he missed his chance.

**

There were doors for the handicap on his building, but Arthur did the gentlemanly thing anyway and opened the main doors for Merlin with an exaggerated flourish and bow. Merlin giggled behind a hand (and Arthur was pleased to hear it) as he did so, and blushed when Arthur opened the other door for him.

But when they got to the lift, there was yellow tape across it along with a sign in front that said: "Out Of Order for Three Days", and it was signed by the attendant.

"What the hell?" Arthur gasped; feeling more disgruntled than when he'd discovered Sophia in the arms of another man. "Great, now what do we do?" he almost pouted. Almost.

Merlin was just as disappointed as Arthur, but he let out a calm breath as he turned his wheelchair around. "Well, I guess it wasn't meant to happen tonight. Sorry, Arthur."

"Wait, Merlin, don't leave!" Arthur got in front of him and put a hand on his shoulder. "I want this to happen! I mean… don't give up on me, please. I'll-I'll carry you up the stairs if I have to!"

Merlin chuckled. "Oh, Arthur. I didn't mean that I don't want to see you again. We'll just have to make it another time, preferably when the lift's working."

Arthur sighed in relief. "Oh, thank God!"

Merlin laughed again, smile wide and beautiful, with small crinkles around his eyes. "It was only the first date anyway," he said. "Let's not rush things, no matter how much we both want it."

Arthur nodded. "You're right. It's a bit too soon. I suppose this is good night, then."

"Yeah, guess it is."

"Do you… well, are you all right with getting home by yourself?"

"Yeah, I'll be fine. I'll just call my sister and she'll pick me up."

"Er, would you like some company while you wait?" Arthur asked. "I don't fancy walking up all those stairs just yet."

"Sure," said Merlin as he pulled out his mobile. He pushed the button he had his sister on speed dial and then put it to his ear.

"Merlin," came her voice on the other end, "are you all right? Did that arse dump you already?"

"No, Morgana," Merlin smiled. "Calm down. I just need you to pick me up."

"Are you still at the restaurant?" she gasped, sounding horrified. "He left you there on your own, didn't he?"

"No!" Merlin laughed, more amused than irritated. "I'm at his building… look, I'll explain later, okay?"

He finally hung up after giving her directions to the place, and then saw Arthur staring at him expectantly. He shrugged and explained, "She's very protective of me."

"Ah, I see."

Arthur waited outside with Merlin, as promised, in the cooling air. Merlin tried to give him his scarf back, but Arthur shook his head and told him it was okay, that he could keep it for now and he'd get it back from him next time they saw each other. Merlin blushed but obliged.

They continued their conversation of everything and nothing that they'd begun at the restaurant. Arthur was slowly learning that they had more in common than he first thought, even if they were glaringly different in other ways (like Merlin not big on eating meat for one). They both liked the colour red ("Although I also like purple and blue," said Merlin), loved cats ("Best kind of pet to have next to budgies, hands down!" said Arthur), enjoyed watching comedies and going to the theater, both enjoyed the Harry Potter series ("I was so upset when Dumbledore died!" Merlin said), and loved looking at rainbows after a thunderstorm.

"I'm a big lover of rainbows," said Merlin. "I even have bed sheets with rainbows on them, and a rainbow pillow…"

"You're a collector of rainbow things then?" Arthur said, grinning. "Well, since we're on the subject, I guess I could admit to being an avid sword collector."

Merlin's eyes widened in awe, "Really? That's bloody awesome!"

Arthur was just about to tell him about his most awesome sword collection when Morgana finally pulled up in her mini van. Merlin actually pouted at the sight.

"Oh, guess my ride's here."

"Yeah," said Arthur, also frowning. "May I call you? For another date, I mean. Next week, perhaps?"

"I'd like that very much," Merlin smiled brilliantly. Arthur smiled back, and then as he leaned down to give Merlin a kiss, Merlin continued with, "I just wish it wasn't so long a wait."

"My thoughts exactly," said Arthur.

Then Merlin's smile became so sweet, so warm and beautiful, it nearly tore Arthur's heart out.

"I'll come see you during your lunch break tomorrow," said Merlin.

"I look forward to it," Arthur said, a strange lump in his throat. "With all of my heart."

"You're a regular Romeo," Merlin giggled.

Arthur took his chance before it was lost again and leaned in to close the gap between them. He kissed Merlin softly with one sweep of his lips, and then pressed a little harder. He could feel Merlin shaking from that one touch, mouth soft and dry, and breath warm and slightly spicy from dinner. He was enchanted. He kissed him again. And again.

"All right, Romeo, that's enough. I don't wish to see you kissing my brother anymore."

"Morgana," Merlin sighed, cheeks ablaze.

Merlin's big sister, Morgana, was pale just like Merlin and had long, dark hair and blue-green eyes. She was wearing a simple, yet elegant ensemble with high heels to match and ruby red lips.

"I'd give him a thousand more if I could," Arthur declared, trying his best to be un-intimidated.

"That'll have to wait, pretty boy," said Morgana, the corner of her mouth twitching. She moved to the back of Merlin and pushed him toward the van. "I have to take him home now so he can get his rest."

"See you tomorrow, Arthur," Merlin said with a shy smile, so sweet and gentle.

"Yes, most definitely!" Arthur waved, his heart swelling. Merlin waved back.

AN2: I am posting this now in order to see if this sort of fic will be well received or if it will be frowned upon. I haven’t written anything like this before so please be kind and let me know if it is worth continuing. If so, then I shall type it up like a fiend on crack and the next part should be posted on May 31st. I have internet access tomorrow, but after that I won’t until I start work in the college library again (May 31st). By then I should have most of it typed up or all of it. I don’t know how many chapters it’ll be yet because it’s all handwritten in my notebook. I started this fic last Autumn, before Series Three came out. Just heads up about it in case anyone’s wondering.

ETA: SO. I LIED. Please read warnings and note the rating.
