The twins were always together, never apart. It was a fact that went unchallenged, though under constant scrutiny, causing speculation to flourish from every quarter. The rumor mill was quieter then, but still it lurked, and the whispers were widespread soon enough.
“It’s kind of cool, isn’t it? Like a mystery. Even though I’ve known them for years they’re still like that.”
“It’s always the two of them…”
“They’re awfully close, don’t you think? That kind of close bond… I wonder…”
“No! Really?”
“They hold hands a lot, you know…”
“Imagine…”
Kaoru glanced down at their clasped hands, thinking. It wasn’t that big a deal, was it? They didn’t do it on purpose, out of worry or anxiety or anything silly like that. It wasn’t a gesture of comfort because they didn’t need such assurances. This - the curve of Hikaru’s fingers closed around his own - was natural. Like breathing. Like existing. What was so mysterious about that?
“Kaoru,” spoke the older twin, and he didn’t move or otherwise indicate, but Kaoru’s gaze was once again drawn to their hands. “They’re just girls.”
They’re just other people.
He knew.
The first time was unplanned, though nobody else would ever know. Both of them tripped and fell into each other so simultaneously it could have been one of their soon-to-be-famous scripts. They balanced out (they always did) and with the entire room’s undivided attention, they silently agreed and started to perform the first of many public scenes.
“Hikaru…” Kaoru breathed, his arms winding around his brother’s neck as if to hang on for dear life. He gasped a little for effect when he felt Hikaru reciprocate, hands circling his waist and pulling their bodies intimately close.
The audience members seemed to hold their breath and Kaoru knew instinctively that Hikaru almost ruined it right then by sniggering. The older twin persevered, however, and queried in a lightly husky voice, “Kaoru, are you all right?”
He closed his eyes and rested his cheek against Hikaru’s chest. “Yes. I’m fine… Since you are with me.” His back started to protest their awkward pose and Hikaru was trembling with the effort to maintain his composure. In the end though, they could just collapse a bit further onto each other and make it look even more emotionally charged.
Hikaru’s hand stroked soothingly at Kaoru’s hair. The younger brother could hear the smirk in his next words, spoken gently enough to hint at a secret but loud enough to be anything but. “I was worried after last night. That I might have…have hurt you, no matter how careful I tried to be. I’m so sorry! I know I got carried away, but I couldn’t resist, the temptation was just too great.”
The crowd became dead silent because yes, they went there.
“No, Hikaru!” He buried his face into the other’s shirt, in part to hide his own grin as he choked out, “Please, don’t apologize! Not for that. I would never regret that.”
“Oh, Kaoru!”
“Hikaru!”
The room erupted in girlish screams as they embraced each other tightly, occasional exclamations of “I knew it! I just knew it!” piercing the din.
By the time school ended and they returned home, Kaoru had noticed the stares and fierce whispers had become ten times more apparent. Well, he supposed it was only to be expected, after that stirring display…
He exchanged glances with Hikaru. “No use worrying over it,” they said together.
“Aah,” the older twin exhaled, fingers loosening his tie. “But it really is amazing. I can’t believe how excited that got them.”
“Who cares, right?” Kaoru shrugged out of his jacket, folding it over his arm as they went upstairs.
“It was still a little fun, wasn’t it?” Hikaru suggested devilishly.
“Heh. Maybe it was.”
The door closed with a sharper than usual sound, like it was… Decisive, Kaoru thought. Abruptly, he turned and grasped the front of Hikaru’s shirt. They stood face to face for a while.
“I dare you,” Hikaru finally challenged, the smirk on his features knowing.
A corner of Kaoru’s mouth turned upwards with irony. “I double dare you.”
They met each other halfway, making up for their individual tentativeness, in an almost casual greeting of lips. Like with all things, the twins moved in concert, fitting together here and there as natural as they were made to be. They were not merely the same; they complimented each other. Hikaru nudged and Kaoru opened. When Kaoru pressed, Hikaru’s back bumped against the wall.
“You were on top ‘last night’,” he explained innocently. “Doesn’t that mean it’s my turn now?”
Hikaru pulled him down for another kiss.
They both realized, sensibly, that this was forbidden. It should be safe, secret, hidden from view. But how could they not be what they were?
Sometimes, being in the open was the best way to hide.
They were the talk of their class. In some ways, they were the height of gossip throughout the school. The deep, tantalizing love between the identical twin brothers made girls swoon by the bucketful. Eventually, inevitably, the excited squeals and dreamy sighs of blissful young ladies drew the attention of ‘King’ Tamaki Suoh.
“Host Club, eh?”
“How about it? You would be a highly valued addition to the club! Think of the prestige! The honor and glory! The happiness of girls everywhere! All because of you!”
“…Well…”
“…Since it’s not a bother…”
“We’ll join.”
Kaoru reached for Hikaru’s hand at the same time his twin reached for his, and there was nothing to it. He felt a squeeze, something that went unnoticed by the eyes of their admirers, and squeezed back. They gazed into each other’s eyes for good measure, much to the delight of their fangirls, though the cries and cheers for the most part went unheard.
In some ways, the important ones, nothing had changed. Those wouldn’t change, not for a while yet. They were still Hikaru-and-Kaoru, a pair, a duo, a special world unto themselves.
It’s still just us.
