I don't get it. Why is Palin being compared to Obama? Shouldn't it be McCain compared to Obama while Palin is compared to Biden? What makes her vice-president candidacy as important as Obama's presidential candidacy?

It hurts my brain. I bet that 90% of people don't even remember who John Kerry's VP running mate was. Why? because it usually isn't an issue. It is an issue this time because she is a woman.

Also, this one fact really bugs me. How the media and pundits are questioning whether Palin can be a mother and the VP. While no one has ever questioned if Obama can be a father and the President. It is sexism, plan and simple.

i think it goes beyond the issue of gender (i personally don't think she's a qualified running mate, but that's just me), but gender definitely has spun this into more press and medai attention than mitt romney would have generated, that's for sure.

and that point was all over the morning news shows. i personally don't think it has much steam. yeah, they're talking about it now, but just wait; something else will come along and it, too, will fade to the wayside.

other than those points, what did you think of her speech?

I think she is a good speaker. She seemed comfortable. Her speech content was okay. Nothing exciting. I don't think I learned that much about her. The job of the VP candidate is to pump up their running mate and tear down their opponent. She did that.

I understand that you personally think she isn't qualified but historically presidential candidates have been governors not senators. Governers are executive positions while senators are legislative positions. Unfortunately, neither candidate for president has executive experience. Palin is the only one of the four that does so I don't agree with your assessment of her qualifications.

But Obama is running against McCain. If you want to look at the ticket as a whole. If someone wants to argue the McCain/Palin ticket is not as strong in the "experience" category as the Obama/Biden, I have absolutely no issues with that.

Just don't get the direct Obama/Palin comparisions.

I think it has to do with the idea of the VP as surrogate. I mean, there's no question of Biden as surrogate- that works. But Palin doesn't so much, for a campaign talking about experience.

Like I said I haven't seen much direct Obama-Palin (I've typed Palin so many times it doesn't look real any more) comparing- though I have seen a LOT of questioning of her record separately. But it might be a media thing too- in a sense, McCain, Obama, and Biden have all been 'vetted' by the media- people know enough about them. But Palin is an unknown quantity, and so there's a lot for the media to dig into, for better or worse- and that sells advertisements and gets viewers and all that.

Both of your points make a lot of sense. Maybe all this focus on her will die down soon. I think she shouldn't be the "issue" of the race. I think the issues and where each candidate stand on them should be.
