I wouldn't say 'excellent' but, yes, I speak it. Is there a problem?
[he did, after all, spend quite a lot of time infiltrating a Japanese energy company. It's the truth- but not the whole truth. And certainly not 'nothing but the truth'.]
No, not at all. You just gave me an odd impression, so I was checking something.
You see, languages are being automatically translated for us, most likely by the CATs or something else in this town.
When I first met you, I didn't know about that and thought that you were speaking in Japanese. You didn't dissuade me from that impression, or volunteer that you were hearing me in English, so when I found out about the translation I worried that you were lying to me. But I suppose if you know Japanese then there is some truth when you said that you're a fast learner.
I don't want to jump ahead recklessly, but I do very much want to understand and trust everyone. [bows deeply] I hope you can forgive my impertinence.

No, that's fine. Instead, maybe just tell me if you really can speak excellent Japanese.
[She very much hopes that you'll be honest, Mister Arthur! That's all she's looking for with this.]
