I was probably the only person who hadn't seen the Nintendo 64 Kid video before I watched it a few minutes ago ( Read more... )

I've heard some indications that closed-captioning is done on the fly, although that doesn't make much sense to me.

But yeah, closed captioning makes me very angry, no matter how goofy it can get. It always runs 10 seconds behind (Which I guess supports the "on the fly" hypothesis," and once in a while it will get so far behind that it just skips whatever line it's on and goes ahead to approximately what is happening on-screen. I don't know why it makes me SO FUCKING FURIOUS. They should not pretend to offer a service if they're going to do such a hopelessly shitty job that it's of no use to anyone. And when they talk about whoever sponsored the closed captioning, I just want to tell that sponsor to go FUCK ITSELF.

I can tell you right now it isn't done on the fly for (pre-recorded shows at least) because I've seen the same show in closed-caption twice and both times there were the same screw-ups and lags occurring at the same times.

Logically, a live show would have live captioning, and in all honesty they're sometimes surprisingly on top of things, but I've also seen live shows with no captions at all, which downright disgusts me.

Try Simpsons in Spanish dubbing (when that's available), that's interesting. I don't watch much closed-captioning, except at the fitness center, when I watch Montel, Ellen or People's Court because those are the only televisions usually available in front of the treadmills I use. They seem to be accurate, but I'm usually more worried about the people's problems than I am about the captioning, but I guess that's the power of good closed captioning...I guess.

I recently saw one where they were talking about astronauts and they were called "astro knots," and they kept that up for the rest of the show.
