ACLU: VICTORY: Florida Law Barring Gay People from Adopting Ruled Unconstitutional

Highlights:
* The court ruled that the ban violated the equal protection guarantees of the state constitution because it singles out gay people and children raised by gay people for different treatment for no rational reason. The court also found that the ban denies ( Read more... )

I guess because I don't have a fundemental fear of 'the gay' like most str8s do, I never got the whole problem with gay adoption. I think most people have this idea in their head that all gays do is run around all day and have some kind of perverted sex. Admittedly if I was gay and had a partner with same sexual proclivities I do I would run around having perverted sex all day...but I digress.

The main issue I have with people who don't think gays should adopt (and this goes for marriage too) is that there are straight couples who are unfit but somehow get to do it ... wheres the protection for those kids? But, no, for some reason it's okay for some people, but not for these other people because they are different even though they might actually be better parents.

I happen to know someone, straight couple, who (IMO) adopted just they could have a kid w/o the mess of actually getting pregnant. WTF?

I agree. Adopting the children that are already here, esp. the older ones is a good thing. The couple I knew did that but:

1) She just didn't want to get pregnant because she would feel 'icky' (her exact word).

2) They spent a ton of money they didn't really have to adopt a kid who was the right color.

3) The kid was 8 or 9 years old, they changed his name to something more American sounding.

4) I don't think they realized that having a child would actually have an effect on their marriage, they divorced very soon after adopting.

Their act was good but I found their motivations...lacking.

It's bittersweet to be granted the same rights that other people already have.

In an era with millions of foster kids with out permanent homes, and adopting babies from other countries seems "Chique", it is nice to see that there are now more families that can be considered for adoption so these kids can have some stability.

JOY! It should always be about the children anyways. I'm glad they cited the Adoption and Safe Families Act.

I think a large amount of folks may believe they are thinking of the children, but perhaps moreso they are projecting their own fears and prejudices on the children...if I were those children I wouldn't want to be raised by gay people or if I were those children I wouldn't feel safe with them.

I don't see that as the same thing as really being concerned about the children.
