Oh and this fic might not make too too much sense right now but there will be a follow up. This was just the set up, you know ~

“Floor 5 please” Taemin asked the man who had just held the elevator for him. He ran home from his night classes, he needed to get home at a good time because we had early morning classes the next day. Tired and out of breath he law his head on the elevator wall.
“You too huh” the man smiled as he pressed the button for the 5th floor, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in the hall before, did you move in recently”
“No, I just leave early and get in late” Taemin responded lightly lifting his heavy head, it had been so long since he had a nonschool related conversation with someone and he almost didn’t know how to react. It almost scared him .But the man didn’t come off as threatening, so Taemin felt calmer in this conversation than he would have in others.
“Well my name is Jinki” the man said as the elevator doors opened for their floor, “I live in 5D”.
“5C” Taemin responded quickly, but not curtly.
“I hope, to see you around more often…your name was?”
“Taemin”
“Taemin, huh? I guess I’ll see you around then Taemin” and with one more smile to Taemin, Jinki went into his apartment.
Taemin stood on the outside of his apartment, just leaning against the door. A smile crept onto his face, “what a strange man”. He shook his head and walked into his own apartment; the smile still on his face.

The next morning, it was Taemin’s turn to hold the elevator for Jinki. The man had on what looked like a running outfit, and this made Taemin slightly jealous: he was wasting his life in class. “Where are you headed off to this morning” Jinki inquired.
“I’ve got class this morning; I don’t know how I’m going to handle it”
“Here take this. I just made it” Jinki handed Taemin a coffee container “It’ll make your day a lot easier to handle”
The elevator doors opened and Jinki ran out but not before giving Taemin a sneaky wink. It took a second or two for Taemin to leave the elevator; he had to absorb the wink that Jinki had just given him. After that moment he walked off towards his first class of the day.
“Hmm” Taemin pondered giddily, “I wonder what that was about”. As he walked onto his first class, holing the coffee in both hands, he couldn’t stop the same smile, which had graced his face the night before, from creeping back up on his face.
He took a sip of the coffee and a warm fuzzy feeling over came him. Taemin stopped walking. “Hold on a second” he took another sip of the coffee “is…is there whisky in this?!?!?!?!” The image of Jinki winking immediately popped back into his head.
~
For the next two months, Jinki and Taemin ran into one another on the elevator every day. They would talk about everything on that elevator; nothing was off limits. Once the two stopped the elevator in the middle of a ride and stayed up the whole night talking about the most random things. But Taemin didn’t really care what they talked about or if they even talked at all. He really just liked being next to Jinki and spending time with the other. After a while he couldn’t take it anymore, his feelings were over flowing and he had to let Jinki know how he truly felt.
Saturday afternoon came and instead of riding the elevator all day long in hopes of running into Jinki, Taemin simply knocked on the boy’s door: for god sakes, they did live on the same floor! He knocked a few times but when there was no answer, Taemin decided instead to turn the knob. Surprisingly enough the door was actually open, maybe the other had quickly ran out for something, with only slight hesitation, Taemin made his way into the others apartment. Jinki’s keys were still on the coffee table so he had to be around.
“Jinki? Are you here? It’s Taemin. I wanted to know if you wanted to go out for coffee or something”.
Taemin walked into the kitchen and noticed what looked like a letter on the counter. Written to someone named Kibum, the letter read:
Dear Kibum,
I thought I could live without you, but I can’t. Life has become so hard without you, it’s all too much. I know you’ve moved on but I haven’t. I need to see you one last time; we have to clear things up. I’m moving out of the apartment we once shared, so whether you take me back or not, I’ll have to move on. Please wait for me Kibum.
                                                                                                                      -Jinki
Taemin suddenly felt as if air was being removed from the room. His felt like puking, he felt like crying, he felt like destroying the letter but regardless of what he wanted to do, he couldn’t move. He was frozen in that moment.
Tears started welling up in his eyes. Though Jinki was never actually his, the other was still an important part of Taemin’s everyday life and he wasn’t ready to let go of that yet. Taemin ran out of the apartment and onto the elevator, this was the one place he knew he’d run into Jinki no matter what and he had to let him know his true feelings. He had to tell Jinki that he needed the boy to stay.
The elevator stopped on the second floor, where the laundry room was located, and Jinki stepped on. He saw the tears running down Taemin’s face and immediately stopped the elevator.
“What’s wrong” Jinki questioned as he placed a hand on Taemin’s shoulder.
“You can’t leave” Taemin shouted, “I need you here”
“What are you talking about Taemin, I’m right here”
“No!” he shook the boy’s hand off of his shoulder, “You’re leaving the building, possibly the city for all I know”
Jinki took a step back, “How do you know that”
“I went looking for you at your apartment and I saw the letter to Kibum on your kitchen counter”
“You went into my apartment?!”
“Only to see if you wanted to go out for a bit but now I know that you want to leave and never come back”
“Taemin…” Jinki tried to calm the boy down
“Why didn’t you tell me? I should have known beforehand” Taemin was still yelling and crying in unison.
Jinki become frustrated and yelled back at Taemin, “I don’t have to tell you anything Taemin, it’s not like we’re in any sort of relationship”
Taemin’s shoulders slumped and the tears stopped falling from his eyes. He pushed the button for the elevator to continue moving.
“I guess you’re right” Taemin whispered as he got off at the lobby “we aren’t in any kind of relationship”
He got off of the elevator and Jinki followed after him, regretting the words he had thrown at the boy.
“Oh god, Taemin. That’s not what I meant. Please-“
“-No”, Taemin turned to look at him “That was exactly what you meant”
Jinki stopped and said one final thing to Taemin “I’m sorry I threw my pain onto you” and with that the two parted ways.
For a good few weeks Taemin avoided the elevator completely and took the stairs. He didn’t want any more of a chance of running into Jinki, as they were already living on the same floor. His heart just couldn’t take it.
One morning he heard a loud thump coming from outside his apartment and went to go investigate. He saw the elevator doors closing with boxes and Jinki on it. The two made momentary eye contact and as the doors shut that would be the last the two would ever see of each other.
Jinki’s apartment door was wide open so Taemin went in. The place was completely empty except for a piece of paper left on the kitchen counter. It read:
Taemin,
I’m so sorry you met me. As there is no greater joy in this world, there is also no greater pain than that of falling in love.
                                                                                              -Jinki
The tears began to fall from Taemin’s eyes once more, staining the note. He held the paper to his chest and walked out of the apartment. As it had come to Jinki, Taemin couldn’t find how any joy could be worth the pain he was feeling and so he hoped to never fall in love again.
