background music

The other day I was talking with matt_rah about background music: the fact that our lives have a constant soundtrack which store radios, thumping cars, subway performers, etc. provide. I listen to background music, e.g. when it's ambient in stores. I worry that I'm weird for doing so, or that I only do it because I forget to listen to music on my own time

I tune out background music because I can't multitask at all - I need to focus exclusively on what I'm doing. This is especially so for writing projects, in which case I just put music on as filler, so to speak. I hate being in a completely silent room, even if I can't focus on the music.

There are occasions, though. Sometimes I'm inspired so much by a song that I listen to it on loop over and over again, using it to fuel whatever it is I'm doing.
