I think you're underestimating the desire for roleplayers to explore the unpleasant aspects of the human psyche. Being able to push those limits of ourselves is one of the reasons many people continue to roleplay. That said, you need a GM who can handle some very unpleasant things if you're going to have someone sub in for you.
