I've done a few commissions, but only for local people, and mostly just tattoo flash. Never had a set price, just whatever they offered, or whatever we agreed on ahead of time. Most stuff was $5-$20, a couple I got up to $50 for. And I did some of them for free too.
My ex-husband has several of my pieces on him, forever.
Used to anyway, it's been years. Nothing fancy usually, just if people wanted something in particular, or a piece of existing flash altered. I can also photoshop them onto people, as a prieview.
I've had people asking for commissions, then when they heard my price, they said it was too much and looked for someone else. XD;
....few days later, they returned. Saying "Good art has it's price. I realised it, and wanted to ask if you are still open for commission."
If you make your art worth the money and do a good job making a customer happy, there's absolutely no problem finding clients. :3 that is what I believe.
As for stubborn artists who price themselves too low...they will never make it into professional business, or one day open their eyes and realise how much art they've nearly given away for free/slave wage. it will bite them in the ass. >:[
there are clients that -WANT- to spend lots of money for an illustration. as some people dont have a brilliant eye for good quality they look at the prices and take it as a criteria - agencies, marketing guys et cetera. a well known company wont comission someone who takes only 100$ for a pic, they look for 500$ upwards. low prices also tell a lot of about your quality and professionality.
sure you wont get fanfiction writers to comission you, but... why should you? less money, less publicity, less professionality. get your prices to a pro lvl and be in the pro world, or take 20 bucks per piece and get fandom overload comission requests.
