Trusting fate had never worked out for her, Sophia once again experienced in the morning, when the first sounds reaching her through the thick fortress of blankets she had built, trying to escape another dreadful night, were the starting tunes of ‘Man’s world’. She didn’t recognize it at first, had never wanted to listen to this song again ever since the last summer Martin had announced that this time, he would not be coming back. But despite him keeping that promise, the song still remained, giving the early day a sharp edge, hurting her when she was still sleep soft and vulnerable.
Even the few seconds it needed her to crawl out of the bed, slower than usual because she hurried so much, already sent a singing sting right from her ears to her chest. Surprised, Sophia figured that the song had not lost a single bit of its appeal, still sounded painfully right in her ears; still sounded like hidden cafes in the city’s backstreets only Martin knew, sounded like road trips with no destination at all safe for a good time, sounded like the first time she had witnessed the sun setting over the ocean, Martin of course at her side.
By the time her fingers hit the button, making the music stop, leaving the room in nothing but its sleepy quietness, tears were already stinging in the back of her eyes.
And she hadn’t even made it to the mirror, yet.
