Even though communism is long gone, Russia seems to be heading back towards being an " evil" country. Just, for no reason. Like they're Pokoponia or Pottsylvania or something. From serial killers to Chechnya to fascist youth gangs to the mob, Russia is determined not to lose its villain status just because

Sadly, Stalinism isn't as dead in Russia as one might think. Both of my Russian History classes last semester took great pains to talk about the present climate over there, and Old Joe is still pretty well regarded by a significant portion of the population.

If you want an indicator of where Russia is going in our lifetimes, just wait until next year. If Putin doesn't step down or if he gets an amendment so he can run again - he's constitutionally barred from seeking a third term - we might be in for another deep freeze in international relations. Putin would easily win reelection; I'd not be surprised if he got upwards of 70% of the vote.

Good thing I'm learning Russian now. That will make it so much easier to get pelmenies when they're our overlords.

As an old Russian Studies hand, I could go on a long rant about it all ... but Putin's Russia depresses me so that, good Slav that I am, I respond by going into a gloomy sulk, ignoring it all in favour of heavy drink, and sobbing into a poetry book.

To grab Kissinger's line about the Palestinians, the Russians have never lost an opportunity to lose an opportunity. ... good gawd, Putin has reduced me to paraphrasing Henry Kissinger. Now I hate him even more.
