Hi,

Yes, the word was first coined in the late 1800s, and the New York Times first used it in 1926. Although it didn't first appear in a Bible until 1946, I think it's very likely that Kate's mother would be familiar with the term by 1941 (and have connected it, or heard others connect it to things described in the Bible.)
