I have neighbors to whom I am a "vertical mass" if nothing more. They used to talk to us before I asked them to please be quiet and stop blowing smoke in our windows so we could sleep, but now I merit the silent treatment, it seems.

The acquaintance-ignoring phenomenon has always puzzled me; I usually give even complete strangers a little nod or smile, and do not understand how one can recognize someone, pass by them however many times, and utterly ignore them. Sure, I don't know what to say beyond "hello", but--we owe each other recognition as fellow humans, at least?
