Hanging out with the cousin at Backspace, an Internet coffee shop/gaming center in Oldtown Portland (115 NW 5th). Very nice, open space with local art, free wifi (natch), a computer repair center, a couple of old school arcade uprights (including Joust, my favorite, with Popeye a close second), somewhat more adult local art in the back featuring ( Read more... )

Hey dude, I found your number and tried to call you. That place sounds awesome, though ugh, me no gots learnings about stuffs like wifi and LANs. That sad about Richard Pryor, me bummed and then watched him as little person in magic box.

Hey! Yeah, I got your message, and for the rest of the weekend I kept reminding myself to call you. Obviously, I need to work on my self-listening skills. I'll try to get in touch sometime this week.

Poor old RP ... heard a really good short commentary on his stuff on NPR this morning.

The Richard Pryor news was sad indeed. Although the man had been suffering for so long. If you haven't seen them, you can get his short-lived Richard Pryor show on DVD. Sketch and some stand-up and even improv (which is weird to watch). The supporting cast (Robin Williams, Sandra Bernhard, Marsha Warfield, Paul Mooney, Tim Reid) is a trip too.

I have seen the first DVD of sketches, and they were (I hate to say) terribly un-funny. I should rent the others to be fair.

I did love the roast the rest of the show's cast did for him, especially Sandra Benhard doing her Diana Ross impersonation and the "fat lips and flat nose" joke.

The 41st President of the United States is funny...what it would be like if Richard Pryor were president and how he would deal with press conferences and stuff. (Reporter: Mr. President, So and So, Tennessee Times... RP: Sit down!)

The Star Bar scene makes me laugh too.

And my students seem to laugh a lot at the Mr. Fix It sketches which aren't really my cup of tea but there is a certain joy in the simplicity of them, I will admit.

Did I ever mention that I was born in Michigan? Lansing. I hear it's... a good place to be from.

My sister and her husband live in a suburb of Detroit, B-something-or-other. I've only been there once before, and it's what you would expect. They do have a nice place, though - cute seventies ranch house. I think she's mentioned Lansing once or twice, but I don't recall anything she might've said about it.

Whenever I mention to someone in the community that my sister lives in Michigan, they almost always perk up and say, "Oh! Mich Women's Festival!", and then they say, in the kind of sly is-she-single way, "Is she gay?" No, she's pretty much the un-gayest person I know.

I'd never make it in Michigan if the Michigan Women's Festival is as good as it gets. I'm a horrible woman. The idea of spending an extended period of time surrounded exclusively by other women just does nothing for me. What's the point? Ovulating in unison? How... exciting.

When I was driving home in a rental car after 9-11 I thought about taking a detour into Michigan. I have a fan there and since I hadn't been there in decades, I thought it was the right time to revisit the area. A speeding ticket in Ohio chilled that idea, since I was pretty intent on breaking the sound barrier on my way back to civilization. Photos indicate it's pretty, except for Detroit, but I haven't had a chance to confirm or deny yet.
