what did you think of the hunger games movie? i thought it was a pretty decent job!

also, i gotta say mad men is really letting me down this season... the only plotline i'm really digging is roger wandering around feeling sorry for himself.

I thought Hunger Games movie was pretty decent too. Of course, having read the books, there was a bunch of stuff that I was frustrated about not having made it into the movie, but it's all pretty nuanced stuff that's hard to show unless you have a lot more time to set a slow pace. One example is that, if I had just seen the movie, I'd probably think Gale was her boyfriend, but of course in the book it's this big deal that he's a platonic friend that actually maybe sort of likes her and secretly, deep down, she sort of likes him too but won't admit it. And the fact that she was totally faking liking Peeta for the cameras, etc. But that's just fan nonsense, right? The movie did a fine job ( ... )

Fat Betty? Alpha Pete? You are actually kind of selling me on picking up Mad Men again (I haven't watched it since like...season 2).

I thought Mad Men just got better and better. I'm still totally hooked! Did you watch long enough to see the amazing, gorey lawnmower scene??

I tried to read the first Game of Thrones book and I could not slog through all those surnames. I think I gave up around page 40something. Maybe high fantasy isn't for me anymore. :(

How's Survivors and the Mindy Kaling book? I used to love her blog.

Speaking of British television (I never thought I would be one of those people who are all ~ohhh the British telly~ but suddenly I am) have you seen the BBC Sherlock or Peep Show? They are both pretty awesome.

As far as keeping all the characters apart, I have the large main cast down pretty well in the Game of Thrones series, but sometimes the literally dozens and dozens of hardly-mentioned people kind of wash over me. Seems to work out ok though ( ... )

Awh, that's too bad about Mindy Kaling's book. I really like her, but that sounds pretty meh.

Lol, Benedict Cumberbatch (does he have any cute tabloid names like B-Cum or Benny Batch?) is awesome. But I've been obsessed with Sherlock Holmes since like...middle school, so I was primed.

BTW we should totally do a ~human services~ happy hour sometime. I want to hear more about what you do! I probably write grants at (or uh, maybe against) you guys or something.

BBQ season already! chocolatebark April 7 2012, 13:19:52 UTC
Man, it was a short Winter. I am v. curious about Wishmaster 2 now (and also the Erik Larson book)--was this the first time you had seen CREEPSHOW? That's such a classic 80's flick.

It was my first time seeing Creepshow. I didn't looove it. I thought the Stephen King segment was hokey and the last segment seemed sooooo long. Then again, we were watching it at a bar.

I recommend Wishmaster 2! I mean, it's dumb, but just relish the Wishmaster's performance and I think it's worth it. It's just SO WEIRD!

Erik Larson's book was enjoyable! I mean, horrific, but a good book and a fine read. I couldn't get into Devil in the White City for whatever reason, even though I enjoy reading about serial killers, but this one was well done.
