Grunnlovsdag - Syttende Mai

May 17, 2007 14:57

Happy Norwegian Constitution Day17th of May is a celebration of the day in 1814 when Norway's constitution was signed in the town of Eidsvoll, Norway. Bunads and Flags. Traditional breakfast and then street parties held in both Kirkwall, the Orkneys and in Norway, of course. It's a double day for me usually. Now, after phone calls fromfamily ( Read more... )

I'm going to a vikning this evening and I plan on perminantly bruising my brain on some bad akvavit .
Didn't know you were a gamer/LARPer.
I want to do it. I really do. I have a character and everything, but based on what I KNOW about that time period, it would be hard for me to settle down and have fun because I'm just too thirdreichophile dorky.
"hay, your character can't wear that, that jacket wasn't issued until 1941!"

I am still a bit daunted about playing in this. I'm not sure how to go about it. I have LARPed before and White Wolfed but nothing like this or that WoW thing. I think I enjoy the character generation more than the role. I can too easily see what lays behind many people's character's actions and find it hard not to put two and two together. I'm never keen on being somewhere that I have to chose my words super carefully to avoid hurting someon's feelings. I suppose I'm just too mean to play with unless that's required or it's a physical event. Online seems hollow. A bit like cyber-sex. *Shudders* I gave it a bash, but the only person to speak to me was one of the GMPs. Anyway, I hope your night out went swimmingly.

Vær så snill, e-mail me quotes on cost of labour, materials, and shipping for a Freja-knit Faroese sweater, black wool leggings for wearing with my kilt, a black wool Aran Islander ("Irish fisherman's") sweater, and a blue-background Norwegian fisherman's sweater?

I would and I wish I could, but sadly i have never leanrt how to do cable knit which I believe is what both the Irish and Scots fisherman jumpers mainly consist of. My Great Granny can but as she's still out ther in the Orkneys it's a wee bit tricky to get lessons. I'm awfully sorry to disappoint. However, do you have an image of the Norwegian jumper you have in mind? If it's not cable knit, as I suspect, it could be possible for me to make for you. I've not mastered socks yet, either. I will, once I get back to my home hearth.

Because the last two were taken in Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkneys, which will be where my Scots side is from. They are also the ship burners. Every year we build and burn a viking ship. The Scots in the Orkneys are mostly Norwegian decent. That's why I said it's a double day for me. The islands come under British rule though. The history of the Islands show that they were often given back and forth between the two crowns as wedding presents. When the Norse left for Iceland and Greenland they stop by the Orkneys on their way to steal some hardy wenches, giving them more blood options within Group A.
