Reading #2

It seems my current choice of reading material is making me avoid the task and instead come here to complain - but that's how it is.

My other current book, Pretty Poison, is part one of a series, the Peggy Lee Garden Mysteries by Jim & Joyce Lavene. I'm about a quarter through and have already decided not to bother with further instalments of the ( Read more... )

The first and third examples are definitely wonked, but to me, the second one could work if it were in the context of someone idly chatting about the plant to a friend.

Thank you. Just to clarify: The use of quotation marks for the text I took from the book is mine, the sentences in question were narrative text, not spoken by anyone.

From the perspective of a British English speaker, all three of them make me wince. Editors clearly aren't what they used to be.

I finished the book about half an hour ago and am still wincing. I do wonder whether they bothered with an editor at all, seeing as there were two of them writing this.

It feels worse knowing that they also published a book titled The Everything Guide To Writing A Novel; apparently they do know all about getting published no matter how unedited their script may be.
