Buffy’s eyes stayed on Nick’s back while he had walked towards the officer. His movements didn’t seem to betray any hint that he found her appearance around another crime scene suspicious. Not once did his fingers pull out the cell phone that was strapped to his waist. His shoulders were relaxed as his gait ate up the distance towards the uniformed officer that stood near the enlarged map. Her breath whooshed out and her nerves calmed down to a more manageable flitter.
Turning she grabbed her pack and flung it over her shoulders; sticking the ear buds back in her ears she pressed play. Chris Martin’s voice drowned out the noise around as her fingers opened the trail map. Red lines streaked about, framing the lake and offering endless options for a hungry Were to grab a helpless hiker.
Normally in a situation like this Willow would’ve performed a little magic, got an area pinned down and off Buffy would go into battle with a tranquilizer gun. Unfortunately finding the location of the Were was all up to her, no magic for Buffy. It was back to old fashioned leg work, sweat, some instinct and lots of luck.
Thankfully there was a Jet Ski rental down by the lake and with the military binoculars in her pack she’d be able to cover more ground than walking. Maybe if she was really lucky she’d be able to spot the crime scene from the water so when night fell she could take a closer look.
Moving away from her bench she froze mid-stride as her green eyes locked on Nick’s face across the lot. He was starring at her. Her heart seizing in her chest, she panicked until she noticed the large grin plastered on his face. Heat spread in her cheeks and hesitantly, she waved back.
What sort of cosmic joke were the powers that be playing with her? A cute, friendly police officer not accusing her of murder but instead was waving and smiling at her.
Lowering her hand she discretely pinched the tender skin of her arm, hard. “Ouch!”
“Houston we have a problem.”
