I understand your pain. The two times I've installed a layout on my LJ were hair-raising and I had to get two more knowledgeable friends to wlk me through it step by step (sometimes more than once. I really AM thick.)
It's because as soon as you alter any of your layout you lose the customisations you made originally. You need to go HERE click on your layers and the old one might be there. Always best to save all the stuff you put in originally then you can just cut and paste the old one in and just alter the url for the new header but that would keep all the old colourings in. If you get really stuck maybe I can help over the weekend but I haven't changed mine for months so have probably forgotten!
Oh we could get frustrated together LOL. I still have the *Component* codes I think saved somewhere but I fancied a change and that's when I lost the header:(
I think I have found the answer *crosses fingers*. This is to add a header using the smooth sailing layout. Ok, click on Customize Journal, then select Custom Options, followed by Custom CSS. In the empty box called Custom stylesheet copy and paste the following:
And in the brackets between the " paste the url (web address) of the header image. Then Save Changes and take a look at the image, if you're happy with the position then you're done, if not tweak the position and/or padding to get it how you like.
