Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

Like this, however have come across a (sort of) answer:

If you are a parent, do you allow your kids to make mistakes, to learn from their own mistakes and hopefully learn not to make them? Then the parent = God, mankind = kids.

OTOH I prefer (grr can't find reference) the idea that what we call evil is that which is out of place, the wrong amount, the wrong time or direction.

this ignores natural stuff, but if you think of the worst crimes such as paedophilia: sex isn't evil, desiring sex isn't evil, but to direct it at a child is out of place, hence we call it evil

Centuries ago it was not thought out of place for girls to be married off young (not sure how young, but certainly under 16)

Nowadays we let the media dictate what we should and shouldn't think of as acceptable.
